In Spanish, there are different ways to say “this” or “these”: esta estas este estos ©2010 Teacher’s Discovery

masculine singular → este feminine singular → esta masculine plural → estos feminine plural → estas ©2010 Teacher’s Discovery

estos libros = these books estas sillas = these chairs Ejemplos: este libro = this book esta silla = this chair estos libros = these books estas sillas = these chairs ©2010 Teacher’s Discovery

If the thing you are talking about is a little bit farther away, use one of the Spanish words for “that” or “those”: ese esa esos esas ©2010 Teacher’s Discovery

If the thing you are talking about is really far away, you say: aquel (masculine singular) aquella (feminine singular) aquellos (masculine plural) aquellas (feminine plural) ©2010 Teacher’s Discovery

aquella montaña = that mountain aquellos cocodrilos = those crocodiles Ejemplos: aquel río = that river aquella montaña = that mountain aquellos cocodrilos = those crocodiles aquellas hienas = those hyenas ©2010 Teacher’s Discovery

All of these Spanish words for “this,” “that,” “these” and “those” are called demonstratives. este esta ese esa aquel aquella estos estas esos esas aquellos aquellas ©2010 Teacher’s Discovery

In the past, you had to add an accent mark if the demonstrative was a pronoun. Ejemplos: Yo quiero este libro. = I want this book. Yo quiero éste. = I want this one. Paco odia esos elefantes. = Paco hates those elephants. Paco odia ésos. = Paco hates those. (the elephants) ↙ ©2010 Teacher’s Discovery
