Faith -Shahada Muslims recite: “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.” This is a statement of belief. –monotheistic -believe in only one god –Muhammad as prophet The prayer is written in Arabic the language of the Qur’an.

Prayer-Salat Muslims are expected to pray five times each day. In Muslim communities, the call to prayer is announced from a minaret atop a mosque. The prayers involve different bowing positions. During prayer, Muslims say “Allahu akbar,” which means God is Great. Before prayer, Muslims are required to wash their feet, face, and hands.

Charity -Zakat All Muslims are required to give to the poor and the sick. Giving to charity is an essential quality of being an honest Muslim. Muslims believe that wealth belongs to God. People are just borrowing God’s money. You “purify” your wealth by donating at least 2.5% to charity.

Fasting -Ramadan Fasting is the most demanding of the Five Pillars. Ramadan lasts for a month. Muslims are not allowed to eat or drink between dawn and sunset all month. This is a special period of purification and devotion to Islam. People who are exempt from fasting are: –elderly –children (also the sick and pregnant women) At the end of Ramadan, Muslims celebrate the holiday of Eidul-Fitr. During this holiday, families gather together, rejoice and share presents.

Pilgrimage -Hajj All Muslims are expected to make the pilgrimage to Mecca at least once. (If they can afford it) A pilgrimage is a journey to a holy place. More than 2 million Muslims participate in the Hajj each year. Men on the Hajj are expected to wear only a white piece of cloth. (This symbolizes everyone being equal) The Hajj lasts several days and can be dangerous.
