Today’s Objectives Overview of MovieMaker Importing video and still images Manipulating video and still images in MovieMaker Adding music/audio and narration Manipulating music/audio and narration Adding transitions and special effects Adding titles, text and credits Rendering a MovieMaker movie Along with importing video and audio, we’ll talk about sources of educational video and free sources for music and other audio. Things we will NOT be dealing with in detail today include downloading video from a camcorder.

Steps to Create a MovieMaker Movie Import Transitions Special Effects Credits (titles, text) Save It’s To See Cool Stuff

Collections/Tasks Pane Monitor Contents Pane Split clip Toggle between tasks and collections panes. The collection pane will display the names of the collections stored in the application. Click on Tasks in the toolbar to toggle to the task view. Contents pane – displays the frames or icons for any videos, audios, stills or other files contained within the selected collection. Monitor – a preview screen for items in a collection or a portion or completed MovieMaker file. 4) Timeline – where images, videos, audios, etc can be added 5) Storyboard, where transitions and effects are added 6) Note – undo is effective on the last 10 actions done on MM2 7) Take a look at the tool bar, at the Up One Folder, New Folder and View icons Storyboard/Timeline Take picture

Creating New Collections Right click on the parent collection Select New Collection Type the name of the New Collection Hit Enter Or click on the New Collection Folder to the right of the collections name bar, type the name of the new collection and hit enter.

Importing Video Files Click to select the name of the collection to import to Click on File in the Menu Bar Click on Import into Collections Navigate to the desired audio, video or still images to import Click to select the desires files Click Import Or click on the Tasks icon, select Import Video and follow the steps above

Importing Video Files Alternate Import Method: Click on Tasks in the Toolbar Select the desired type of file to import in the Capture Video pane Navigate to the desired files Click to select the desired files Click Import Or click on the New Collection Folder to the right of the collections name bar, type the name of the new collection and hit enter. NOTE: Videos and video clips are ALWAYS imported into a new collection; whereas audio and still images can be imported into an existing and selected collection. Video collections can then be dragged and dropped into existing collections. To delete a collection, click on it and hit the Delete key. NOTE: after deleting a collection, an undo will restore the collection to its original location within MM2. Collections can be cut, copied and pasted as well. Mention Views here – thumbnails to details or arrange icon by: use the icon to the extreme right of the collections bar to change the view, or use View in the menu bar File clips can be renamed using the usual process

Supported Files MovieMaker can import the following file formats: .wmv (windows media video) .avi (audio video interleaved) .mpeg (moving pictures expert group also named as .mpg, .m1v, .mpg) .asf (active streaming format) CANNOT IMPORT Apple Quicktime Files (.mov) CANNOT output in .mpg format (DVD burner format) Collections can be cut, copied and pasted as well. Mention Views here – thumbnails to details or arrange icon by: use the icon to the extreme right of the collections bar to change the view, or use View in the menu bar File clips can be renamed using the usual process Files imported from DV camcorders have time stamps to allow for markers to separate the clips. WMV files do not have markers, but significant changes in the video (like going from indoor to outdoor) causes a marker to be inserted automatically.

Importing Audio Files Click to select the name of the collection to import to Click on File in the Menu Bar Click on Import into Collections Navigate to the desired audio, video or still images to import Click to select the desires files Click Import

Importing Audio Files Alternate Import Method: Click on Tasks in the Toolbar Select the desired type of file to import in the Capture Video pane Navigate to the desired files Click to select the desired files Click Import NOTE: audio files CANNOT be imported directly from a CD, the audio track must first be copied to the PC and then imported into the collection

Got All My Files, Now What? Splitting Clips Use the monitor controls to move to the desired point and click on the icon to split the clip Combining Clips Click on one clip to be used, hold CTRL and click the next clip to be used, continue until all clips are selected Click on Clip in the menu bar and select Combine

Got All My Files, Now What? Take a picture Use the monitor controls to move to the desired point in the video and click on the icon to take a still picture of the displayed frame of the video Mention that if a big red X appears in the content pane where a video clip should be appearing that means that the file has been renamed or moved. To restore the link to the file RIGHT click on the X icon and select Browse for Missing File, navigate to the new location of the file, or restore the file to its original name and click open and the link to the file will be restored.

Timeline or Storybook? Storyboard – great for sequencing a project, adding transitions or effects Timeline – used for trimming clips and manipulating audio/music, text and titles

Project or Movie? Project – is a work in progress. Saving a file using the File – Save Project As command saves the file as .MSWMM This file type may be edited and manipulated. Movie – rendered or finished work, saved as a .wmv file, can no longer be edited

Adding Assets to the Storyboard Add video clips or still images to the storyboard by clicking and dragging the desired image to the desired position. NOTE: images can be repositioned or deleted from the storyboard, BUT no blank positions are permitted in the storyboard

Adding Assets to the Timeline Add video clips, still images or audio to the timeline by clicking and dragging the desired item to the desired position NOTE: If video is added to the timeline, accompanying audio is automatically inserted in the audio track as well. However, this audio track can be muted to allow for a different audio track or narration to be played with the video.

Trimming Video or Audio Clips Both video and audio clips may be trimmed by resetting a start and/or end point. To trim clips: Switch to Timeline View Click on the clip to be trimmed, the Trim Line will appear Click on the Play button in the monitor When the desired start or end point is reached in the clip, click on the Pause button in the monitor Click on Clip in the menu bar Select either Set Start Trim Point or Set End Trim Point The Clip will be trimmed as desired NOTE: trimming clips does NOT effect the original video or audio files, and trim points can be undone or cleared if desired. Mention that clips can also be trimmed using the trim handles on the video or audio clip when clicking within the clip, but this method is much more inexact than the method listed above.

Using Transitions Switch to Storyboard View Click on the Collections icon to display collections Click on Video Transitions Click on the desired transition and drag it to the desired location To change the length of the transition change to Timeline View Click on the transition in the Transition Track The Trim Line will appear along with a trim handle in the transition list in the Transition Track Click on the trim handle and drag to increase or decrease the length of the transition

Using Transitions Only ONE transition is permitted per transition marker A single transition can be applied to all the assets within a project In Storyboard View, click on Edit in the menu bar and choose Select All RIGHT click on the desired transition Select Add to Storyboard

Using Special Effects Switch to Storyboard View Click on the Collections icon to display the collections view Click on Video Effects Click on the desired effect and drag it to the desired position Multiple Video Effects can be placed in a single Video Effects marker Multiple Video Effects are indicated by two stars appearing in the Video Effects marker To reposition or change video effects within a marker, RIGHT click on the video effects marker and then choose Video Effects The Add or Remove Video Effects window will appear, change or reposition video effects as needed

Working with Audio There are two audio tracks in MovieMaker Audio Track – which holds audio accompanying video files Audio/Music Track – used to hold independent music or narration tracks. NOTE: either music or narration can be added to the audio/music track. To add both, first add the audio, complete other additions or changes to the project, then render the movie, import the resultant video and add the narration track to the audio/music track

Working with Audio Switch to Timeline View Click on the Collections icon to display the collections view Click on the collection holding the desired audio file Click on the desired audio file in the contents pane and drag it to the desired position on the audio/music track To trim an audio clip, click on the clip to be trimmed, the Trim Line will appear Click on the Play button in the monitor When the desired start or end point is reached in the clip, click on the Pause button in the monitor Click on Clip in the menu bar Select either Set Start Trim Point or Set End Trim Point The Clip will be trimmed as desired Mention here also that by right clicking on an audio clip the clip volume can be set and the clip made to fade in or fade out.

Working with Audio NOTE: Although clips on the audio/music track can be trimmed independent of video, the audio clips on the audio track accompany video and if the video is trimmed the accompanying audio is trimmed as well, and vice-versa. To work around this and mute a portion of audio accompanying video, Split the video clip at the point that the audio is to be muted. After Splitting the video clip (the accompanying audio clip will be split as well) right click on the audio clip and select Mute. The audio will play For the first portion of the clip, but be muted for the second portion of the clip.

Working with Audio To add narration to a clip: Switch to Timeline View Click on the clip to which the narration will be added Click on the microphone icon above and to the left of the Video Track Click on the Start Narration button and begin speaking into the microphone on the PC Click on the End Narration button to stop recording Name and save the narration audio file Click on Done The narration audio file will be placed on the Audio/Music track Remember, you need a microphone on your PC or laptop to record Narration! Demonstrate narration with laptop if time allows

Titles, Credits and Text Text can be inserted into a MovieMaker file by using the Titles and Credits feature. To add text to a MovieMaker File: Click on the Tasks icon Click on the Make Titles or Credits link in the Edit Movie area Select the type of title to be created: Title at the beginning of the movie Title before a selected clip Title on a selected clip Title after a selected clip Credits at the end of the movie

Titles, Credits and Text Type the desired text Select the desired animation Change the font, color, size and attribute of the text as desired Click on Done, Add Title to Movie NOTE: The display of text depends a great deal on the type of animation selected. If a title clip is created and you wish to add additional text to the clip: Click on Make Titles or Credits Click on Title on the Selected Clip Add the desired text Select Subtitle as the animation display Click Done, Add Title to Movie

Titles, Credits and Text Title clips can be lengthened or shortened by clicking on the clip as displayed in the Timeline View, Video Track and dragging the clip handles as desired. Text clips can be lengthened or shortened by clicking on the text clip as displayed in the Timeline View, Title Overlay Track and dragging the clip handles as desired. Text can be overlaid across clips. To accomplish this, click on a text clip as it appears on the Text Overlay track and drag the clip right or left as desired. One text box will appear to overlay the other, allowing both text items to be displayed simultaneously across the clips. (Be careful about the choice of animation when using this technique, don’t let the text or titles blot each other out when displayed!)

Titles, Credits and Text Credits can be added at the end of a MovieMaker file. Note that when adding credits the text is entered into a table type of display: Note that the text entered on the left hand side of the table will appear smaller than the text entered on the right hand side of the table. For example: Cast of Characters Harry Potter Daniel Radcliffe

Saving the Final Product MovieMaker Files can be saved to: a computer or a CD for playback on a PC send the project by email (beware of size limitations on this!) VHS (a multiple step process!) DVD – requires a third-party software such as Sonic’s MyDVD To a DV camcorder for playback from the camcorder

Saving the Final Product To Save to a PC: Click on File in the menu bar Select Save Movie File Click on My Computer Click on Next Give the movie file a name Select the drive/folder to save the movie file Select the playback quality Select Next The MovieMaker file will be saved as a .wmv file
