Status report on MQYY (Q4) Q4 update Status report on MQYY (Q4) 05/06/2016 H. Felice, D. Simon, M. Segreti, A. Madur, J. M. Rifflet A. Foussat

MQYY: 2 parallel paths Based on a design study carried out at CEA MQYYM: MQYY short model MQYY prototypes within QUACO Based on a design study carried out at CEA (M. Segreti) Physical L = 1350 mm endshoe to endshoe Magnetic Length = 1204 mm at 1,9 K Outer diameter = 360 mm OUTLINE: Status on magnetic design Status on mechanical design Status on engineering design Status on fabrication Status on magnetic measurement and test preparation Next steps Selection of 4 companies to design and manufacture MQYY quadrupole (competitive process 4/3/2 in conceptual/engineering/manufacturing phase) Starting point: CEA magnetic design Mechanical design will NOT be provided Offers have been evaluated by technical committee (JTEC) pending validation by QUACO Steering committee. Target date for beginning of phase 1 : October 13th 2016

MQYYM: update on magnetic design MQYYM: MQYY short model Operating Gradient 120 T/m Operating current 4550 A Bpeak at operation 6,42 T Short sample current 5980 A MQYY: prototype design (CEA) Operating Gradient 120 T/m Operating current 4590 A Bpeak at operation 6,44 T Short sample current 5997 A Ongoing comparison of 3D ROXIE and 3D Opera

MQYYM: update on mechanical design Castem to ANSYS comparison Identical mechanical ppties Same assumption on creeping (20 %) CAST3M has the V2 magnetic version ANSYS has the V3 version version Comparison / cross-checks ongoing CAST3M ANSYS Cool-down (sq in Pa) Cool-down (sq in MPa) After creeping (sq in MPa) After creeping (sq in Pa)

MQYYM: update on engineering design MQXC experience discussed with G. Kirby Assembly plan of MQYYM discussed in detail with Juan Carlos Perez and Arnaud Foussat on June 15th: Collaring will be performed at CERN by a CEA team assisted by CERN Yoking will be performed at CERN by a CEA team assisted by CERN Interface tooling and assembly tooling will be designed and fabricated by CEA based on existing models and drawings provided by CERN. Design to start on October 1st. Ongoing discussion with J. P. Perez to prepare for CEA team to work at CERN Tooling Design Assembly tooling Procurement If >5 k€ procurement through CERN Nordine Azizi / Arnaud Foussat (CERN) Hubert Neyrial / Hélène Felice (CEA) Coil fabrication tooling: RFT done, order to be placed soon End spacers: first 2 sets: RFT done, ongoing negociation Angular wedges: RFT ongoing Collars: RFT in preparation Remaining component design Connection box Protection heater Ground plane insulation Instrumentation Complete integration

MQYYM: update on magnetic measurements and test preparation Initial discussion at CERN at the workshop on test facility (June 2016) No solution for MQYYM Meeting at CERN on 27/07/2016 with L. Fiscarelli, O. Dunkel and S. Russenschuck Cold Probe and measuring system will be provided by CERN Agreement on a probe: 47 mm in diameter, 5 modules of 222 mm in length Main difference identified between CERN and CEA facilities: CERN: pressurized bath CEA: saturated bath (23 mbar )=> concern about freezing the system => design work on the probe mouting ongoing at CEA (JM. Gheller) to ensure sealing, meeting at CERN on 18/10. Work ongoing on position of probe wrt magnet Agreement on the fact that the operation of the system will be done by CEA (supported/trained by CERN) Test Preparation CAD Modification on an existing header is ongoing. Hardware modification should start in January 2017

MQYYM: Next steps Quench protection : Simulation with Qtransit and ROXIE. Ongoing work on benchmarking and fine tuning the models Ongoing preparation of the test Protection Heater design ongoing Target completion: mid November 2016 Meeting on conductor to assess the needs to be planned Conductor available at CEA for first 2 coils Finalization of the engineering model, components specification and RFT Target: 1st coil winding by the end of 2016 Becomes tight due to tooling procurement: tooling received at best early December
