Unit Title: Prayer and Ritual Focus Question: How does my understanding of prayer and ritual shape me? Learning Intention: To understand what the ‘magisterium’ is and does. Success Criteria: To complete a higher level thinking task relating to the topic. Last Lesson Eucharist This Lesson Magisterium Next Lesson Prayer of St Francis

The Magisterium of the Church (Catechism) 85 "The task of giving an authentic interpretation of the Word of God, whether in its written form or in the form of Tradition, has been entrusted to the living teaching office of the Church alone. Its authority in this matter is exercised in the name of Jesus Christ." This means that the task of interpretation has been entrusted to the bishops in communion with the successor of Peter, the Bishop of Rome. [the Pope] 86 "Yet this Magisterium is not superior to the Word of God, but is its servant. It teaches only what has been handed on to it. At the divine command and with the help of the Holy Spirit, it listens to this devotedly, guards it with dedication and expounds it faithfully. All that it proposes for belief as being divinely revealed is drawn from this single deposit of faith." 87 Mindful of Christ's words to his apostles: "He who hears you, hears me", the faithful receive with docility the teachings and directives that their pastors give them in different forms.

Summary of the Magisterium (Catechism) 96 What Christ entrusted to the apostles, they in turn handed on by their preaching and writing, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, to all generations, until Christ returns in glory. 97 "Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture make up a single sacred deposit of the Word of God" (DV 10) in which, as in a mirror, the pilgrim Church contemplates God, the source of all her riches. 98 "The Church, in her doctrine, life and worship, perpetuates and transmits to every generation all that she herself is, all that she believes" (DV 8 § 1). 99 Thanks to its supernatural sense of faith, the People of God as a whole never ceases to welcome, to penetrate more deeply and to live more fully from the gift of divine Revelation. 100 The task of interpreting the Word of God authentically has been entrusted solely to the Magisterium of the Church, that is, to the Pope and to the bishops in communion with him.

True? – Stand up! False? – Sit Down! Pope Francis is the successor of Jesus’ disciple Peter. TRUE – this is the apostolic successorship The members of the magisterium never do anything wrong. FALSE – they are only human It is the job of the Magisterium to interpret the Word of God. TRUE – they have been entrusted with this duty The Magisterium must teach everyone in the Church. TRUE – they must hand on their knowledge.

Watch this clip on The Magisterium Write a definition for Magisterium which includes all of the words below Bishops Teaching Pope Church Authority

Role of the Magisterium The Holy Spirit guides the Church through the Magisterium. The Magisterium is preaching the gospel and applying it to the lives of Catholics and therefore helping us to do God’s will and to bring about God’s kingdom. As a consequence we can say, Jesus speaks through the Magisterium offering the voice of truth.

Choose your own task based on your confidence on the topic! Identify in the passages above (slides 3 and 4), the most important sentence which explains what the Magisterium of the Church is and copy it into your OneNote. Where does the word “Magisterium” come from and what does it actually mean? Explain the relationship between Scripture, Tradition and the Magisterium. You can use this clip to help you. Examine and explain in detail what is meant by “Infallibility of the Magisterium” by using the following link. Find an image from a meeting of the Magisterium of the Church and annotate it. (Note: Annotate means to label and explain what you can see.) Vatican II explained the doctrine of infallibility as follows: "Although the individual bishops do not enjoy the prerogative of infallibility, they can nevertheless proclaim Christ’s doctrine infallibly. This is so, even when they are dispersed around the world, provided that while maintaining the bond of unity among themselves and with Peter’s successor, and while teaching authentically on a matter of faith or morals, they concur in a single viewpoint as the one which must be held conclusively. This authority is even more clearly verified when, gathered together in an ecumenical council, they are teachers and judges of faith and morals for the universal Church. Their definitions must then be adhered to with the submission of faith" (Lumen Gentium 25). Do you agree or disagree with this explanation? Explain why or why not. Choose your own task based on your confidence on the topic! Tip: Work at your own pace, this is not a race!
