Previous Model of the Atom The problem with Dalton’s first model of the atom is that he stated atoms are the element in its purest form and it can not be broken down any more. He was later proven wrong by other scientists.

Experimental Design Dalton did not use an experiment but he researched atoms to estimate these key points: atoms are particles in their purest state the atoms of an element are the same atoms of different elements can be told apart by weight atoms of elements combine to form compounds atoms can neither be created or destroyed

Evidence that led to a change in the model -A scientist named Avogadro found evidence that the mass of a gas does not affect the volume that it occupies. He also offered more accurate estimates of the atomic mass of oxygen and various other elements. -Scientists also found that an atom can in fact be divided into smaller particles. - Dalton said atoms had no separation between positive, negative, and neutral charges but that was later found inaccurate by J.J. Thomson, Ernest Ruthford, and Niels Bohr

How Dalton Developed a New Atomic Model Law of Conservation of Mass + Law of Definite Proportions = Law of Simple Multiple Proportions Dalton’s experiments built upon two theories, the law of conservation of mass and the law of definite proportions. By studying and building onto the two laws, Dalton developed his own law of simple multiple proportions.

Background information about Dalton John Dalton was born into a Quaker family on September 6, 1744 Early in his career he also researched color blindness Both him and his brother were color blind
