Operations Technical Working Group L. Waganer 6-7 September 2007 ARIES Project Meeting at INL

Demo Plant Operations The purpose of the Demo facility would to demonstrate all key power plant objectives to a reasonable degree (perhaps up to 85% of power plant characteristics). This certainly addresses performance, RAM, and all normal operational aspects of the commercial version of the plant. It would produce electricity but this is not the primary objective. The primary objective is to minimize operational risk to the potential investor.

Purpose, Scope and Members of ARIES-TNS Operations TWG Purpose: Develop operational plans and recommended R&D to mitigate risk of plant operation Scope: - Develop operational requirements for Operations, RAMI, and test campaigns - Consider IHMS implications on operations - Identify R&D items that could reduce operational risk and enhance availabilty - Develop Operations R&D projects and plans - Consider both test operations as well as normal operations - Translate operational requirements into design requirements Tentative Members: Les Waganer, Boeing, Lead Chuck Kessel, PPPL, Physics Alan Turnbull, GA, Physics Lee Cadwallander, INL, Reliability Said Abdel-Khalik, GIT, Regulatory Issues Rich Peipert-Jr, Boeing, Maintenance Tom Weaver, Boeing, I&C

TWG Plans Firm up working group membership Review Purpose and Scope Define Schedule Decide on telecon frequency Determine, secure, and evaluate sources of information Utility Advisory Committee ARIES-Starlite Review experimental operational requirements, plans and R&D Include DIII-D and ITER Assign actions to be accomplished Evaluate degree of automation anticipated and staffing needs Training and simulation needs Regulatory licensing of operators Maintenance (power core and BOP) Process activities (fuel processing and hot cell) Safety Establish normal operations as well as major power core maintenance operations
