ITK Strip Module Meeting; 12st October 2015 Thermo-mechanical ABC130 Module Production ITK Strip Module Meeting; 12st October 2015 We have used CD cases for temporary storage. ITK Strip Module Meeting; 12st October 2015 Irradiation plans for ABC130 and ABCN250 at Birmingham Following-up on Craig’s plans for irradiation at the B’ham cyclotron, as discussed in ITK Week: “250 nm plans: B’Ham to set-up the ability to irradiate the 18 chip 250 nm hybrid they have (and prepare for 130 nm irradiations).” “130 nm plans: 8 ABC130s on single chip boards to be made at RAL with 3 x TRADUCT, 3 x 6-621, 1x 3013, 1 x 3525 and sent to Birmingham for proton irradiation. Craig/John/Phil to organise.” Initial plan was to irradiate with chips ‘switched-off’ (no power, no clock), purely as a test towards glue choice (ie receive boards from RAL, and send back to RAL for post-irradiation tests). There are arguments to have the chips in a state more similar to the real operation: Preparations to set-up full readout during irradiation. Reminder: Birmingham MC40 cyclotron has infrastructure (‘coldbox’) set-up by Liverpool and Sheffield for silicon sensor irradiation: “Upgrade to the Birmingham Irradiation Facility” - Dervan, P. et al. Nucl.Instrum.Meth. A796 (2015) 80-84; http://www.np.ph.bham.ac.uk/pic/cyclotron ITK Strip Module Meeting; 12st October 2015 10th August 2015, Petal/Stave Meeting 2

ITK Strip Module Meeting; 12st October 2015 Hardware wish-list We have two Atlys-based test systems (with VMOD-IBs): One inside electronics clean-room, one outside (eg to move to cyclotron during irradiation tests). DAQload absolutely welcome at Birmingham ! Is ours ready ? Note: DAQload is not to be irradiated. It’s for our general program of electrical tests towards hybrid and module production. NB: Phil and Simon at Wirebonder’s Meeting at RAL on Wed. Opportunity for safe transport by car from RAL to B’ham. In order to run ABC130 ‘alive’ during irradiation, may we have a TMU, a patch board and a single-chip ABC130 board ? Even non-FIB’d chip. Getting this into operation may be quite a learning curve, starting with JTAG to TMU and register read/write to TMU. Either ship soon, or pick-up after DESY testbeam (Juergen doing shifts there) ? Possibly a ‘second hand’ setup (RAL or maybe UCL) ? We have Linux-based test system for easy ITSDAQ/SCTDAQ updating. 10th August 2015, Petal/Stave Meeting ITK Strip Module Meeting; 12st October 2015 3

ITK Strip Module Meeting; 12st October 2015 Preparations for Irradiation of ABCN250 chips at Birmingham We have Stave09 V4 ABCN250 barrel hybrids available which still work, epoxy-glued (conductive epoxy) in 2013. Candidates: One hybrid with 8 chips working (good for first test of the setup and initial irradiation), one hybrid with 16 chips working (for more serious irradiation tests later), now tested with Atlys and still look ok. Note those hybrid are from our very first wire-bonding trials, panel ‘B2’). (Note: ‘18 chip hybrid’ found not to work ok in recent tests, ruled-out now). Preferably not irradiate fully working (20 chip) hybrids (keep them as benchmarks) Main task now: How to move all the infrastructure to the B’ham cyclotron. Main issue there: How to fix and connect hybrid inside the coldbox. We have received old panels from L’pool (thanks, Tony), plan to cut-out one hybrid area with IDC connectors for power and data, wire-bond our hybrid onto that, fit it into coldbox and connect Atlys and power. ITK Module Meeting; 12st October 2015 Preparations for Irradiation of ABCN250-Hybrid: Details Quite long distance between coldbox and control-room, about 15m: Current plan is to have Atlys inside, but behind lead wall (other groups have a PC there, so shouldn’t harm it). Already installed 15m long network cable and 15m power cable between coldbox and control-room. Keep PSU outside for power-ramping and also quick emergency power-off (will test voltage drop on 15m cable) Use ~6m data cable between hybrid and Atlys. We’ve already tested a 4.5m data cable. PC can be moved from lab into control room (we have 3 installed with ITSDAQ) In parallel: Work on improving humidity and temperature monitoring in coldbox (with ArduinoDuo, mostly operational), optimising nitrogen flushing procedure and box sealing Also learning to access on-hybrid temperature sensors (10kOhm NTC). Also talk to Richard and Kyle (Toronto) about their irradiation experience at CERN (SEUs ? Jumps in power consumption ?) 10th August 2015, Petal/Stave Meeting ITK Module Meeting; 12st October 2015 5
