This is the true story…. Of five parts of speech Picked to live in a sentence Work together And be studied by high schoolers

To find out what happens When words stop being polite And start being real

NOUN a person, place or thing Can be used as a subject The DOG went outside. Can be used as an object for a verb The BOY kicked the BALL.

PRONOUN A word that substitutes for a noun HE decided to walk to the movies. There is nothing for you to do.

ARTICLE Any word used to signal the presence of a noun A, AN, THE

CONJUCTION A word that connects other words, phrases or sentences And, but, or, because She was going to walk but then it started to rain.

ADJECTIVE A word or combination of words that modifies (or describes) a noun Her blue jacket is really old. The temporary parking lot is looking full.

VERB A word that expresses action, existence or occurrence I ran four miles today. They decided their puppy needed a haircut.

ADVERB A word that modifies a verb, adjective or another adverb She walked slowly through the door. The orange snake slowly made its way through the classroom.

PREPOSITION A word that shows a relationship of a noun to another noun By, in, to, from, with, through She decided to come through the front door.

CW #1 1st P: name, city, age, and some interesting detail(s) (neighborhood, where family is from, etc.) 2nd P: family (who live with, who in family, origins, pets, etc.) 3rd P: interests (sports, hobbies, music, other activities, etc.) 4th P: school & future (best/worst parts of school, college aspirations, career goals, etc.) 5th P: What would you like/expect out of this class?

Warm-Up: Monday 9/13/10 *Identify the parts of speech for each word in the sentence Each of the sisters has her own computer. Those tap shoes are Emily’s, but where is her outfit? The baking bread smelled good. My father’s favorite kind of music is rock-n-roll. Cassi has an incredible talent for drawing pictures.

Warm-up: *Identify which part of speech fits with each word* 1. Her loyalty and honesty made her a great friend. 2. Inside the classroom was a happy teacher. 3. A spotted coat helps the leopard hide from its prey 4. The loyal fans cheered their team on during the game. 5. We had no homework tonight because of the class meeting. 6. The elephant slowly walked past us toward the watering hole. 7. Ms. Cusmano believes money cannot buy happiness.

Warm-up: 9/16/10 1. She quickly ran to the bus before it left her stop. 2. He is driving me crazy! 3. Teenagers think Paris Hilton is really annoying. 4. I have three green sweaters in my backpack. 5. The students walked quietly down the hall. 6. The puppy clumsily climbed toward its owner.
