Life in the Church

Getting on to getting along Paul in what we know as the “Pastoral Letters” give Timothy instructions about how to behave; both personally and corporately fro the church. Principles and practices setting guidelines that the church may live in peace.

Getting along With new national leadership… Can confine our discussion about our leaders to the instructions of Paul?

1 Timothy 2:1-5 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior,

who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,

Roman 13:1,2 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.

Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

Be Calm - to get along Jude writes about ungodly people have wormed their way into your churches, saying that God’s marvelous grace allows us to live immoral lives. He urges the church to understand that God is in control

Jude verse 7 And don’t forget Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring towns, which were filled with immorality and every kind of sexual perversion. Those cities were destroyed by fire and serve as a warning of the eternal fire of God’s judgment.

In talking about these people V.8 In the same way, these people—who claim authority from their dreams—live immoral lives, defy authority, and scoff at supernatural beings.

Jude 9 But even Michael, one of the mightiest of the angels, did not dare accuse the devil of blasphemy, but simply said, “The Lord rebuke you!” (This took place when Michael was arguing with the devil about Moses’ body.)

But these people scoff at things they do not understand But these people scoff at things they do not understand. Like unthinking animals, they do whatever their instincts tell them, and so they bring about their own destruction. Be calm – God is in charge –

And don’t let others look down on you There are two possible ways to accomplish this: You can change the way the world around you looks at you You can change who you are

I Timothy 4:13 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching.

Discouragement 1 Timothy 5:20 Those who continue in sin, rebuke in the presence of all, so that the rest also will be fearful of sinning

Think about Peter rebuked by Paul Galatians 2:11ff But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. For before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived,

he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group. The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray.

When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of them all,

So God has given instruction…To Keep us in our lane To get along with one another To not inwardly suffer To keep us calm

Colossians 3:15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful
