TAXIS AGAINST TRAFFICKING GIVE YOUR TAXI DRIVER A TEA BREAK ANTI- SLAVERY DAY, 18th OCTOBER 2012

INTRODUCTION STOP THE TRAFFIK The power of STOP THE TRAFFIK is in the thousands of activists around the globe who give their time and energy to fight human trafficking by creating change and awareness in their community and beyond. Individuals, communities, organisations, clubs, faith groups, businesses, schools and charities are all part of STOP THE TRAFFIK. Anti-Slavery Day: 18th October 2012 Established in 2010, a UK and European day to raise awareness of human trafficking.

WHY TAXI’S? Taxi drivers can be the eyes and ears of the community Taxi’s have been used to transport victims of trafficking to and from situations of exploitation Taxi drivers have the potential to be key stakeholders in the fight against trafficking “While taxi drivers are offenders in a small minority of cases, we believe that the vast majority can be a major force for good in tackling human trafficking. They hold a wealth of community information and play a key part in identifying and reporting suspicious activity.” UK Human Trafficking Centre report, June 2011

HOW THE CAMPAIGN BEGAN “One day I got talking to my taxi driver, and after I mentioned human trafficking he revealed that he suspected one of his passengers might have been a trafficking victim. I went back to my community group and everyone agreed there was great potential to raise awareness with taxi drivers. We designed a sticker that drivers could put in their taxis with information about trafficking, and a helpline to call.” Brenda, ACT Liverpool With support from her local authority, taxi drivers across Merseyside were issued with this sticker when they went to renew their licenses. We have now adapted it for use nationwide.

SUPPORT FOR CAMPAIGN The campaign has the support of the Home Office A number of local authorities have already decided to issue stickers to their taxi drivers including Birmingham who purchased 4000 stickers to give to taxi’s when they renew their license.

GET INVOLVED Join our global day of action 18TH OCTOBER 2012- GIVE TAXI DRIVERS A TEA BREAK! Get together and take part with your community group, friends, school, or colleagues Fundraise for the Taxis Against Trafficking stickers Help us reach as many taxis as we can!

HOW TO TAKE PART: Give taxi drivers a tea break: Go to your local taxi rank Chose your busiest local taxi rank, it’s probably next to a travel hub such as the train or bus station or in the centre of your village, town or city.   Speak to taxi drivers Head down to your chosen taxi rank with some nice refreshments and before you ask the taxi drivers to take part in the questionnaire offer them a nice cup of tea! Offer them a Traffik-Free taxi sticker Once they’ve completed the questionnaire ask the driver if they would be happy to put a Taxis Against Trafficking in their cab.
