Assessment at Billesdon 2nd February 2016
How do we assess your child? DfE – statutory assessments: Reception – Baseline on entry and EYFS Profile Year 1 (and 2) – Phonics Check Year 2 and Year 6 – End of Key Stage SATs Other assessments: On-going assessment EYFS-Year 6 – Termly data check points in Reading, Writing and Maths
Reception When a child joins us in September they have a baseline assessment. This was done on a computer with Mrs Timson very early in the term Children are assessed on Target Tracker termly to track progress At the end of Reception they are assessed against the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile which states whether they are emerging (below), expected (average) or exceeding (above)
Phonics screening (week of 13th June)
End of Key Stage SATs Sarah and Lisa to talk through the new tests
No levels Alongside the introduction of the New Primary Curriculum in September 2014 levels were removed except for years 2 and 6. However we were permitted to continue with levels for 2014-15 for all year groups while the change took place. From September 2015 Billesdon moved to no levels across the school. Children were all baselined in September on The Essex Target Trackers new scale of Age Related Expectations (ARE).
ARE Year 3 example of band and steps Taken from baseline in September and shows expected attainment at the end of year 3. Progress has been set at 6 steps
Where we are Under the new assessment system children are expected to be working within bands which correspond to their year group. Therefore Year 1 work within band 1, Year 2 in band 2 and so on. Within each band is 6 steps; b = beginning b+ = beginning + w = working within w+ = working within + s = secure s+ = secure +
Expectations We are aiming for the children to be at least at w+ in their band by the end of the academic year. b/b+/w = below Age Related Expectations w+/s = at Age Related Expectations s+ = Above Age Related Expectations (High Achieving Pupil) Similar to EYFS – emerging, expected and exceeding
Progress We have set targets of 6 steps progress in a year. Therefore if a child finishes year 4 at 4s, they should finish year 5 at 5s. On this basis we expect approximately 2 steps progress every term. Age Related Expectations (ARE) at the end of the; autumn term = b/b+ spring term = w/w+ summer term = w+/s/s+
How we assess On a daily basis through summative assessment Work produced in class Conversations with children about their work Using the statements on Target Tracker (National Curriculum expectations)
How we assess Through formative assessment at the end of each unit/term Tests relating to English and Maths units taught Progress tests in English and Maths (from GL assessment); These give us a standardised score (100 being average/expected) and help formalise end of term assessment on Target Tracker software
Current position (end of autumn term) Year 1-6 (84) Reading Below ARE 18% At or above ARE 82% Above ARE 20% Writing 30% 70% 10% Maths 23% 77% 26%
Reporting Spring term reports will go home before the Easter Holiday. Due to this we have put Parents Evening’s back to the second week in the summer term. The reports will look similar to the termly reports we had before the changes…
Spring Term Report
End of year reports (Y1-Y6) SATs results and Teacher Assessed results - on the report may be slightly different as the test is a snapshot of performance on the day, where teacher assessment is performance on a daily basis in class and in books. See report format for 2016 (word document)
