How to keep your child Maths happy! A small booklet to help you and your child be Numerate over the summer holidays

Contents Baking Around the neighbourhood Journeys in the car Sunny days out Wet days in Shopping Journey games Good websites to use

1. Baking How much do I need for 16/20/32 cakes? Ratio Makes 8 cakes 1. Baking If I know that there is 1000g in a kilogram, can you convert all the ingredients into kilograms? Converting NB Although it is good practice to convert to lbs and oz, it is no longer on the syllabus! How much do I need for 16/20/32 cakes? Ratio If I have unlimited amounts of the ingredients but only 450g of butter, how many cakes can I make? Times If I have to bake a cake for 20 mins and it is now 11:23am, what time should I get them out? If fish fingers take 12 mins and chips 17 mins and I want them ready at the same time, how long after I start cooking should I put the fish fingers in – and if it is 12:10pm now, what time should that be?

2. Around the neighbourhood Height of things in the area Use a crisp packet (obviously)! Fold the packet to make a isosceles triangle. Line up the corners with your eye and the tree top and hey presto – the distance from you to the tree is the same height as the tree (plus your height) Counting house numbers Can you count all the house numbers on our street? What if you walk to the shops – I’ll count of the left – you the right – who wins? Bin day How much does 1 black bin hold? If everyone fills there bin, how much rubbish is that? How big a cube would you have to dig to fit all that waste? (1 litre = 0.001 m3 = 1000 cm3) Percentages What percentage of houses have satellite tv? Averages What is the average number of cars on our street? G

G 3. Journeys in the car Speed Are we there yet? As previous – using to work out the time left – and therefore what time you should arrive. Flip it – we have 100 miles left and want to be there in 1 hour 30 mins – what speed do I need to drive (be careful of your child expecting you to drive at illegal speeds!) G Speed Reset your speedometer at the start of the hour, after [20 mins] say “We have travelled [miles] – what was my average speed in that time Converting 1 mile = 1.6 km. Can you convert 50 miles to km? Although not knowledge required – still good practice. I often do this on my bike rides as km/h is a larger number than mph!!

4. Sunny Days Out Symmetry Can you make a symmetrical sandcastle? Is that tower symmetrical? Why/why not? Shell/leaf/pine cone collection Collect then use for all kinds of statistics! Bar charts – Pie Charts Making art Ice cream/ Fish and chips Could you buy ice creams for the family with £5? How much does 2 fish and chips cost?

5. Wet days in Board games Dice – times tables How much more do you need? What is the probability of getting that? Monopoly money/banker – how much change? 1 2 3 4 5 6 Diagrams – from 4. Use the items collected to make a pie chart or bar chart

G G 6. Shopping Estimating Can you guess the total of the shop, to the nearest £1 (£10) G Offers Are they really better – how much by? BOGOF – how much did we save in total? Is it always better to buy cheaper? G How much is one? If 4 cans of Beans cost £2.50, how much does one cost? If Coke is £1 a bottle on BOGOF, how much is one bottle on average?

7. Journey Games Pub Cricket Number of legs on a sign – up to a maximum of six! If you get a tree – you’re out! Car counting Each member of the family chooses a make of car and then counts on the number of that make they see. To keep things even, play ‘sets’ up to 10 How many wheels? Award points for the first person to spot a vehicle with e.g. 10 wheels. Green light jeopardy – At first green light – award 5 points. Then double or quit at next lights…if red you lose all points

8. Notes page
