What do we use monitoring data for? Data from the monitoring programme is used to inform a wide range of studies, including: Coastal Processes Studies Shoreline Management Plans Coastal Risk Management Strategies Beach Management Plans and Operations Scheme Design Post-scheme appraisal 06/07/2018

Types of data we use Beach Profiles…. Waves and Tides…. Annual Reports Assess beach movement trends, especially when combined with wave and tide data. Use in calibrating/validating cross-shore models, especially post-storm surveys. Use in calibrating/validating shoreline evolution models. Waves and Tides…. Link to understanding beach profile responses. Use in calibrating/validating numerical models. Annual Reports Provide a very useful summary of recent changes in a study area. 06/07/2018

Types of data we use Aerial Photos, LiDAR and Bathymetry…. Assessing coastal change of cliffs and inter-tidal areas. Assessing shoreline evolution Calibration/validation of shoreline evolution modelling. Create difference models to assess changes. Utilise to establish DTMs for numerical modelling. 06/07/2018

About the projects Dawlish Warren & Exmouth Beach Recharge Technical Appraisal Study To appraise options for delivering beach recharge over the next 20 years to maintain Dawlish Warren and Exmouth Beach. Output will be two BMPs. 06/07/2018

About the projects Exe Estuary FCERM Strategy To deliver a 100 year strategy for managing flood and coastal erosion risk and habitat within the Exe Estuary (Langstone Rock to Orcombe Point). NOTE: strategy informs choice of preferred option for the short term in the recharge study (so as not to be detrimental to long term strategic option). Recharge study analysis informs processes understanding and conceptual model for Exe Estuary. 06/07/2018

Analysis using SWRCMP data Bathymetry and LiDAR used to establish DTM for HD and Wave Transformation models. 06/07/2018

Analysis using SWRCMP data Wave data collected for study used to calibrate and validate wave transformation model. Data to be passed to PCO for future use. Wave model used to derive nearshore wave climate to use in overtopping analysis and drive beach cross-shore and shoreline evolution models. 06/07/2018

Case study 2 Burnham on Sea, Berrow and Brean Beach, Dune & Coastal Defence Assets Management Plan 06/07/2018

About the project Located on the eastern side of Bridgwater Bay, Somerset, UK. Protects the large low-lying area of the Somerset Levels from coastal flood risk. Area contains beaches backed by both hard defence structures and natural dune system. Very complex coastal processes due to influence of Parrett and Severn Estuaries. 06/07/2018

About the project Wide variety of landowners and defences. Private defences/properties built into sand dunes. Different management approaches along frontage. Local conservation group involvement in dune management to capture. Defra Pathfinder project developed approaches to adapting to coastal change for this area. BDMP has taken this forward with further community engagement. Access through dunes by large numbers of tourists is problematic. 06/07/2018

About the project Development of a BMP for the south-east end of Chesil Beach, Dorset, UK 06/07/2018

About the project Only focussed on management of the beach and it relationship with other defence assets. Not to define management of other assets (e.g. seawall/gabion monitoring or maintenance). Major issue over ability of available techniques to allow definition of robust trigger levels. Chesil Beach is a unique feature for which standard methods of analysis are not applicable. Site is within UNSECO World Heritage Site (the ‘Jurassic Coast’), SAC, SPA, Ramsar and SSSI designations. Management must be sensitive to these features. Primary flood risk is from ‘unpredictable’ swell wave events – we may know when they are coming from Met Office but do not understand the interaction with the beach system sufficiently to issue accurate flood warnings. 06/07/2018

Analysis using SWRCMP data Beach profiles used to develop processes understanding, including: Changes in beach crest height & width Changes in CSA/volume Storm profile response and recovery Beach stability (Barrier Index) Analysis updated in subsequent Chiswell Gabions study – data also used to validate SHINGLE model as part of that study. 06/07/2018

About the project Review and update of BMPs at Lyme Regis and West Beach, West Bay, supported by options appraisal for future beach management Lyme Regis recharged in 2007 to deliver separate sand and shingle beaches as part of LREI Phase 2. West Beach recharged in 2005 with shingle as part of West Bay Coastal Defence and Harbour Improvement Scheme. 06/07/2018

About the project Study to develop a BMP for Teignmouth and Shaldon Beaches. Includes appraisal of options for recycling sediment from navigation channel to these beaches, supported by numerical modelling by ABPmer and understanding of the Teign Estuary system. 06/07/2018

Teignmouth Pier and Dawlish wave buoy data used to input to XBEACH 1D and 2D models. Beach profiles used with XBEACH to model existing beach response to storm events. 06/07/2018
