GEORGIA TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS SS8G2 The student will explain how Interstate Highway System, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, and Georgia's deep-water ports help drive the states economy.

Georgia has a vast network of Interstate Highways which connect many of our borders and cities.

Jobs, taxes, and other income is generated from roads…

Interstate Highways Five major interstates include: I-85, I-75, I-20, I-95, I-16 Interstate highways have limited access and higher speeds compared to regular roadways. These highways move people and products across our state quickly. Multiple jobs are required to maintain these roads, support the travelers, and provide for the motor vehicles Georgia Stories: Interstate System (12 mins)

DEEP WATER SEAPORTS Georgia has two major deep-water ports, Savannah and Brunswick. Ports provide jobs for Georgians Ports move foreign and domestic products into Georgia through container shipping Ports are connected to the Interstate system as well as Georgia’s vast railroad network. Ports therefore provide more jobs to transport and sell these goods. Georgia Port Authority and jobs (3:21)GPA promo

Natural Waterways water = transportation of people & goods Georgia also has two inland barge terminals , Bainbridge and Columbus There are also many rivers in Georgia which provided early settlers with a ready means for travel The largest rivers in Georgia are the Savannah, Chattahoochee, Flint, Altamaha, Ogeechee, Oconee, Ocumulgee, St. Marys and Satilla

Airports Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta is the busiest airport in the world. This This airport links our local businesses with the world. Hub for Delta, Airtran, UPS Georgia has 104 total airports video clip (5:40) Atlanta Airport

Railroads Railroads are connected to the deep water ports and to many cities in Georgia as well as across the country. Georgia’s major Railroads are CSX, Norfolk Southern, and GDOT short lines. Georgia Stories (7 minutes): Georgia Stories

Georgia’s Railroads: a transportation web!

What If??? In black pen and complete sentences, respond to one of the following scenarios using what you have learned about the connections between Georgia’s Transportation Systems (classwork grade): Scenario #1: Make a prediction of what would happen to business in Georgia if Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport closed. Include at least three examples of how it would affect the state (economy, jobs, traffic, flow of products) and other transportation systems. Scenario #2: Make a prediction of the impact of drastically dropping water levels in the ocean and in Georgia’s inland waterways. Include at least three regions of Georgia that would be affected along with what industries within those regions would also change. Include which two transportation systems would also be most affected.

Create a Company With your odd / even partner, create a scenario in which you: Have a manufacturing company Need locally-made (Georgia) materials shipped to you (pg 53, 606) Make a product Need product shipped to customers (domestic or international) Answer the following questions: Who are you (company type)? What materials do you need? What do you make? What GA transportation systems will you use and why?
