Synthesis Writing

“There is a popular idea that synthesis just means that a paragraph contains two or more sources…. However, I would contend that true synthesis isn’t happening unless a relationship between the sources is apparent.” –Karen Craigo

The Trial Take a position. Craft a clear argument with sound reasoning Use evidence to support Use commentary to elaborate / explain Consider opposing evidence Provide a clear, logical rebuttal Finish strong (call to action) Note: Clarity is dependent upon organization, transitions, and lead-ins.

The Process 1. Analyze the sources (understand what the source says) 2. Articulate what the author says 3. Put texts in conversation (show relationship between texts) 4. Evaluate the texts and the relationships between them 5. Create an argument based on that

Do Review the prompt Analyze the sources: Decide which seem well thought out What are their limitations or weaknesses? What are their strengths? State your position early (first paragraph) Introduce sources in your essay Use lead-ins Consider the strongest opposing argument Consider your audience (see prompt)

Do Not DO NOT Organize paragraphs by source (or follow the compare / contrast format from earlier this year) DO NOT agree with every source!!! DO NOT leave out the concession / rebuttal DO NOT misuse the text or misconstrue an argument.

Now what? Timed write = Rough Draft What did you do well? What needs improvement? Reread the articles. Reorganize your ideas (if necessary) Touch up lead-ins and transitions Make sure you have a concession and strong rebuttal! Final draft due Tuesday, February 14.
