ELA ReadyGEN 2016, Pearson This includes 4 units with 2 modules per unit: Each unit has a science or social studies theme Each module has a performance based assessment (PBA) at the end Writing: This program is balanced with writing that is linked directly with the days reading activity. “Let’s write like the author.” Reading: Discussions, word analysis, close reads, vocabulary, etc. Graded work: written response, multiple choice, vocabulary Differentiated & flexible groupings

ELA Topics Reading Unit 1: Scientists, researchers, animals Unit 2: Tall tales, Pourquoi tales, Native Americans Unit 3: Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Natural Disasters Unit 4: Starting businesses, using money Writing Unit 1: Biographies, Infographics Unit 2: Narratives, Opinions Unit 3: Opinion, News Reports Unit 4: Narratives

Science This year the students will be studying several different hands on units that directly correlate with our ELA & Social Studies curriculums. Units are aligned with the Illinois Next Generation Science standards. These units include topics like energy, sound waves and natural disasters. Energy Waves (Ocean, Sound, Technology) Molecules to Organisms Earth’s Geology Earth’s Movement & Landforms Earth & Human Activity

Social Studies We use the Houghton-Mifflin series for S.S. There will be five units the students will be covering this year: Our Land and First People Exploration and Settlement The English Colonies The American Revolution The New Nation

Social Studies For quizzes the students will be able to use their textbooks. This will help them utilize the skills of reading and understanding non-fiction textbooks. For tests, students will not be able to use their textbooks. This will help them prepare for the testing style, and study strategies in future grades. Study guides will be provided.

Math School District #308 utilizes the My Math program. The program has been implemented district wide Pre-K through High School and includes learning opportunities for enrichment and reteaching. My Math relies on a variety of ways to teach, practice, and review the concepts including: Flexible & Differentiated Grouping Direct instruction Partner work Games Small group activities

Math (cont.) The purpose of the My Math curriculum is to allow students to explore key mathematical concepts and ideas through an in-depth study of all the content strands of mathematics. This also includes real world math applications.

My Math Student Edition (Here you could show a student workbook with this slide to show each part of the lesson) Understanding math vocabulary is key to understanding math concepts. My Math will begin with My Math Words which reviews previously introduced words. The My Vocabulary Cards are ready to go and use vocabulary that will be introduced and used in the chapter. These cards can also be printed at home from the Student Center. The lesson format is the same for each lesson. The first section is Explore Explain in K-2/Math in My World 3-5. This is a hands on, teacher guided exploration of the new concept. The essential question for the chapter is listed. The next section is See and Show in K-2/Guided Practice in 3-5. In this section, the students practice the new concept with support. After that, students do independent practice (called ‘On My Own’ in K-2/ Indepednent Practice 3-5). Each lesson ends with a problem solving page. Learning how to apply math concepts to real world problems is an essential component of the program.

Assignments Assignments are posted in the classroom and each student is responsible for writing them in their assignment notebooks. Our goal is to prepare your child to be independent and responsible. Please sign your child’s assignment notebook daily, if you feel it is best practice for him/her. If no homework is assigned, you can always encourage your child to study math facts for accuracy and fluency, and read for at least 20 minutes!

District 308 Homework Guidelines Purpose: At the elementary level the purpose of homework, when assigned, is to reinforce or extend classroom learning for individual student success. Length: On average: K-2 Fifteen Minutes/Day 3-5 Thirty Minutes/Day No Homework Over Extended Breaks Examples: Included, but not limited to: K-2: Daily reading, sight words practice, special projects, math practice, etc. 3-5: Anticipatory preparation, daily reading, math practice, special projects, study guides, etc. Requests for make-up homework are accepted by the school office on the second day of absence by 10:00 a.m. Make-up homework should then be prepared for after-school pick up or sent with a designated student.

Take Home Folders & Data Binders Take Home folders are designed to house any notes students may need to bring back and forth to school, as well as any notes from me. This folder will also bring home any completed work that has been checked but is not graded. Data Binders will be coming home each Wednesday with all graded work showcased. The binder is divided into subjects. Students organize their graded work in their binder, and calculate their grades each Wednesday. All work stays in their binder week to week and gets emptied after each semester.

Grades Grades will be based on the following scale… The scale will always be posted in the classroom and the students have already been made aware of them. The scale is also in their binders, along with directions for figuring their letter grades. Please remember this is the first year your child will get letter grades. Please reflect on how you want to discuss and support your child in this new stage of becoming an upper elementary student. Celebrate the grades with your child! If a B was earned by your child’s best effort, celebrate!!
