Presentation transcript:

Welcome to bulldog time for 2017-2018, 8th graders!!! I’m Mr. Gibbs, and I teach technology. Please listen as I direct you to your assigned seat. Introduce or say ‘hi’ to the people at your table. Help me if I pronounce your name incorrectly. Today we will each get an AVID Binder to help us stay organized and support our success as 8th graders.

Being ready together…our AVID binders! Organization is a key to success in school. Your AVID binder will help you make sure you have everything you need in a place where you can find it. Pencil Pouch should be filled with: 1 box colored pencils 2 pencils with eraser tip 2 blue pens 2 black pens 1 highlighter of each color (pink, blue, yellow) Binder should contain: 1 student planner 1 Student handbook 1 package of dividers with tabs 1 red pocket folder 1 stack of notebook paper 4 sheet protectors

The AVID Binder: Putting it All Together! Front cover: Your Personal Crest-We will make these tomorrow Place your schedule where you can easily see it, in the outside back or inside front  Spine:  Name Art – we will do this later on! Pencil Pouch Planner – it goes directly behind your pencil pouch, but in front of your class tab dividers

Other Supplies and FYI’s Blank Lined Paper Generally, it is a good idea to have about an inch. When you get to less than ¼ inch of paper, restock! Pencil Pouch and contents provided by Baker MS Please keep your pencil pouch stocked with items you need. Its okay to add to it, but you need more than notes and glitter gel pens 

Divide and Conquer! You have 6 dividers with tabs. Please label as follows: Math Humanities/Language Arts Science Elective (P.E., Reading, Foreign Language, Art, Technology) Social Studies Advisory/Bulldog Time Hint! Use your schedule to determine which 6 classes you will need tab dividers for!

Peer Binder Check! With elbow or table partner, go over the list and make sure everything is in order and labeled! Front cover: blank or with schedule for now Spine:  blank for now Pencil Pouch and contents Planner 6 dividers with tabs labeled as follows: Math Humanities/Language Arts Science Elective (P.E., Reading, Foreign Language, Art, Technology) Social Studies Advisory/Bulldog Time Blank Lined Paper 4 sheet protectors

Bulldog Time Rotation You will have a chance to look at organization and study habits through the lens of different subject areas this year. Rotate to a different Bulldog Time teacher every 6 weeks. Practice what you are learning in each subject. Have a strong set of skills as you transition to high school and beyond.

Welcome to bulldog time for 2016-2017, 8th graders!!! I’m Mr. Gibbs, and we are together again. Please find your seat. Introduce or say ‘hi’ to the people at your table. Help me to pronounce your name correctly. Today we will each get an AVID Binder to help us stay organized and support our success as 8th graders.

A Walk through the Handbook What are the locker requirements? Can you wear flip flops or slides to school? How about Shorts? Which sport session has volleyball? Which has basketball? Bring the signed Academic and Behavior Standards Contract back to me Wednesday (p. 37).

Your Personal Crest or Coat of Arms In medieval times a family had a visual symbol that represented their heritage, interests, skills, or history. This “Coat of Arms” was carried on armor or found on artwork in the homes of the family, and identified them to others. You will create a “Coat of Arms” as the cover to your AVID binder.

Your Personal Crest or Coat of Arms Draw pictures (no words!) for each section of the crest. Section 1: Something about yourself you would like others to know about you (blue eyes, always smiling, athletic, avid reader, etc.). Section 2: Someone that you admire or look up to (the kind of person they are or their career). Section 3: WRITE your LAST NAME (big enough to fill the box) Section 4: Favorite school activity, class, or sport Section 5: The career or work that you wish to pursue after high school.
