Similarities between the Texas Revolution to the American Revolution Many Anglo Texans were the children or grandchildren of patriots who had fought in the American Revolution. Now they, too, took up arms against their rulers. In 1775, Americans had rebelled against a distant ruler in Great Britain. Now, Texans were rebelling against control by faraway rulers in Mexico City.

Comparing the Texas Revolution to the American Revolution This painting shows U.S. General George Washington crossing the Delaware River. The event was a turning point in the American Revolution.

Similarities between the Texas Revolution to the American Revolution Great Britain originally left the colonists alone. The colonists began to develop the colonies largely on their own. Great Britain feared losing control over the colonies and cracked down. King George III denied the colonists their rights. Colonists believed in self-government and lived over 3,000 miles away from the seat of government in England. The Continental Army was made up of untrained volunteers. Colonists felt they had little representation in the English Parliament. England sent troops to the American colonies to force taxes on the colonists. Mexico originally left the settlers alone. The settlers began to develop Texas largely on their own. Mexico feared losing control over Texas and cracked down. Similarities between the Texas Revolution to the American Revolution Santa Anna denied the settlers their rights. Settlers believed in self-government and lived over 1,200 miles away from the seat of government in Mexico City. The Texas troops were made up of untrained volunteers. Settlers were upset at having to pay taxes to Mexico. Mexico sent troops to Texas to force policy changes on the settlers.

Battle of Anahuac - Recap Mexican troops enforced trade and immigration laws. Texans felt the taxes were being collected unfairly. A battle was started: -Several Texans were thrown in jail. -Mexican official forced to surrender and leave Texas! The Anglos’ uprising at Anahuac in June 1835 made Colonel Domingo de Ugartechea (oo-ahr-teh-CHEH-ah) nervous in San Antonio.

After Anahuac, Colonel Ugartechea worried that the Texans would use the cannon against Mexican forces. Four years earlier, Mexican leaders had loaned a small cannon to the Texans at nearby Gonzales to fight Comanches.

Ugartechea decided to take back the cannon in case of any trouble. Colonel Ugartechea knew that General Cós and about 300 Mexican troops were on their way to San Antonio to arrest Texas leaders who opposed Santa Anna. He sent a small group of soldiers to Gonzales to bring it back. Ugartechea decided to take back the cannon in case of any trouble.

Texans- Refused to return the cannon. Made a flag – “COME AND TAKE IT”. Proved they were willing to use military force against Mexico.

Presidio La Bahia Significance – Cut off Mexican army’s supply routes. General Cos and his troops left Goliad to help put down the rebellion in Gonzales. 27 Mexican soldiers surrendered after 30 minutes – Texans took Goliad! Significance – Cut off Mexican army’s supply routes. Volunteer army consisting of about 120 Texans, including 30 Tejanos, attacked Goliad while Cos was gone.

Consultation of 1835 A meeting, called the Consultation, was called to discuss the future of Texas. 98 delegates from all parts of Texas were to gather in Washington-on-the-Brazos in October.

Consultation of 1835 Not All Texans Support the Revolution ( ). The Siege and Capture of San Antonio Meanwhile, General Cós reached San Antonio on October 9, 1835. Cós had about 800 troops under his command. He placed some in the town and some in a nearby abandoned mission, now used as a fortress. The mission had been known as San Antonio de Valero, but Texans knew it better by another name—the Alamo.

A Texas soldier spotted some Mexican soldiers just outside A Texas soldier spotted some Mexican soldiers just outside of San Antonio with a large number of mules. It was said that the mules carried silver to pay Mexican soldiers.
