Foundation Stage Maths Workshop

Follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum Maths is split into 2 areas: Number and Shape Space and Measure Curriculum is split into Learning Outcomes 30-50 mths, 40-60mths, ELG. Practical and fun!

Number ELG Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20. Lots of songs, rhymes and games! Roll a dice and collect the correct amount – bricks ( dice 1-6 1-20) Numicon fantastic new resource Place numbers in order. Order cards to 10 Order 4 numbers

Number ELG Say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Number fans Number mats on floor Using quantities and objects, they add two single-digit numbers and count on to find the answer. Roll 2 dice, count out the correct amount for each, how many all together? Domino addition

Number ELG Using quantities and objects, they subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. Skittles Football They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing. Doubling - Ladybird spots, fingers, Halving - Fruit, tangerine segments Sharing - Pretend food at the table, cups, plates, marbles, jigsaw pieces. Have we got enough for everyone?

Shape Space and Measure ELG Children use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money. Investigation/ exploration size, Tall, taller, tallest, Short, shorter, shortest. Measuring items using cubes and rulers. Weight, Using scales to find items that are heavy and light. Moving to heavier, heaviest, lighter and lightest. capacity, How much something holds. different shaped containers to learn the concept of full, empty, half full, nearly full both with water and sand. position, Vocabulary is important. Where is Teddy/ child? Under, on top, next to, inbetween, behind. Play hunt the ..... Game giving instructions/ directions. Choose an adult and ask them to close their eyes. Hide an object and give instructions distance, Choose a person. Can you estimate how many steps will it take you to reach the door? Can you write the number on the board? When done write actual amount on board. What is the difference? What about if you do really small steps/ giant steps? Time – days of the week, months of the year, seasons, o’clock. Money – recognising different coins, begin to know their value.

Shape Space and Measure ELG Children compare quantities and objects and to solve problems. Now applying their knowledge and understanding of the previous objective. They recognise, create and describe patterns. We do lots of pattern work looking at patterns in the environment and copying patterns we see. We use peg boards, Chinese Dragon printing, using the bricks, duplo, bead threading, unifix, multilink, numicon

Shape Space and Measure ELG They explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them. 2D and 3D Shapes feely bag to describe properties, making pictures, sorting by shape, curved/ straight sides. Clixi boxes. What shapes can you see in the classroom? Point to a square? Circle? Cuboid? Cylinder?

How can you help at home? Read the Maths booklet! Use the school website to access links Use Busythings computer program Use the Maths Pack to help with Homework Challenges Play counting and board games Baking Practise writing numbers Use simple maths vocabulary every day Keep it fun!
