Super Saturn Super Saturn By Arabella Roshan Mr Speedie St Anne’s CofE Primary School
Project Overview This presentation will look at the facts and information about Saturn and its distinctive appearance with the many visible rings that surround it.
Super Saturn Saturn is the 2nd largest planet in the solar system with thousands of ringlets which surround it. Saturn is surrounded by 53 confirmed and 9 provisional moons. The rings: Are made up of ice and rock particles The particles range from tiny dust-sized icy grains to some as large as mountains. Saturn is thought to have 17 main rings, with many ringlets. The rings around Saturn are considered to be 100 million years old.
Saturn’s Moons Moon Key facts: Each of Saturn's moons bears a unique story. Some, such as Prometheus and Pandora, interact with ring material, shepherding the ring in its orbit. Moon Key facts: Lapetus Iapetus has one side as bright as snow and one side as dark as black velvet, with a huge ridge running around most of its dark-side equator. Phoebe Phoebe orbits the planet in a direction opposite that of Saturn's larger moons, as do several of the more recently discovered moons Mimas Mimas has an enormous crater on one side, the result of an impact that nearly split the moon apart. Enceladus Enceladus displays evidence of active ice volcanism: Cassini observed warm fractures where evaporating ice evidently escapes and forms a huge cloud of water vapor over the south pole. Hyperion Hyperion has an odd flattened shape and rotates chaotically, probably due to a recent collision. Sixteen of Saturn's moons keep the same face toward the planet as they orbit. Called "tidal locking," this is the same phenomenon that keeps our Moon always facing toward Earth.
Super Saturn: Key information If the sun were as tall as a typical front door, the Earth would be the size of a 1p and Saturn would be about as big as a basketball. One day on Saturn takes 10.7 hours (the time it takes for Saturn to rotate or spin once). Saturn makes a complete orbit around the sun (a year in Saturnian time) in 29 Earth years (10,756 Earth days). Saturn is a gas-giant planet and therefore does not have a solid surface. Saturn has 53 known moons with an additional nine moons awaiting confirmation of their discovery -- that is a total of 62 moons. Saturn has the most spectacular ring system, which is made up of seventeen rings with several gaps and divisions between them.
Quiz Time How many confirmed moons does Saturn have? Saturn’s rings are made up of what kind of particles? How small and how large do the particles range from? How many rings is Saturn thought to have? How old are Saturn’s rings thought to be? Thank you! Arabella
