Criteria for success… At the end of today’s lesson, we will continue to read the text, Outcast United, and we will analyze the text for author’s purpose, point of view, and characterization.

Outcast United Chapter 1 Activity Independent Activity Respond to the following prompt: In chapter 1, Luma realizes that she had changed and could never feel comfortable living in Jordan again. Citing evidence from the text, explain why Luma would not feel comfortable living in Jordan after she had lived in America. Read Chapter 2 Beatrice & Her Boys Listen as I read the introduction and chapter 1 of the text. As I read, think about how Warren St. John used characterization to inform us about the type of person Luma is.

Outcast United Chapter 2 Independent Activity Read Silently Chapter 2 of the text, Beatrice and her Boys. As you read, think about how Mr. St. John uses characterization to describe Beatrice. How do her interactions shape her character? How does her behavior shape her character? Independent Activity Complete the character trait graphic organizer for Beatrice. Respond to the following prompt: After being robbed by a man with an African accent, Beatrice Ziaty lost hope that her family would be safe in their new home and became obsessed with protecting her boys. Writing from the perspective of Beatrice, write a letter from her to her boys explaining why she has become obsessed with protecting them. Remember to cite textual evidence to support Beatrice’s claim.

Outcast United Chapters 1 & 2 Independent Activity Select one of the following individuals (Luma or Beatrice) and using the text & your notes, write a brief character analysis describing the individuals traits based on their thoughts, interactions with others, and behaviors. Remember to cite textual evidence to support your response. Luma is a very courageous and confident person that is not afraid to step out on faith for her dreams. Luma was willing to stay in an unknown land, America, without her father’s blessing so that she could live the life that she wanted to live. When her friends did not believe it was safe for a Muslim woman to live in Atlanta alone, Luma was unafraid and moved there without a job, family, and friends.
