Welcome to Second Grade Open House

Meet Mrs. Gribbin Earned Masters Degree in Elementary Education from Seton Hill University in 2001 Worked in the GLSD as substitute teacher, long term substitute, and classroom assistant from 2001-2009 Certified to teach Elementary (K-6) Previously taught 3rd grade at Baggaley Elementary

Technology Update Back to School Forms SchoolMint - Parents/Guardians will be receiving information and instructions on the first day of school along with an access code. (paper form)   Email registered with GLSD, parent will receive this information through an email.   If a parent does not wish to complete the information online, we will provide them the opportunity to request printed forms. District Mobile App / District Website Makeover (appearance and function) FCC Ruling - will not longer permitted to send broadcast e-Alerts Anticipated within the next month

Expectations CLASSROOM RULES *Listen when your teacher is talking *Follow directions quickly *Keep your hands and feet you yourself *Raise your hand to speak *Be safe, be kind, be honest REWARDS *Positive notes home *Certificates of achievement *Stickers *Special celebrations CONSEQUENCES Green card—doing great! Yellow card—warning Orange card—lose 5 minutes of recess Red card—lose 10 minutes of recess and red card report is sent home for parents signature

Homework Binder Please check your child’s homework binder NIGHTLY! Current spelling words are kept in the blue sleeve. Words are tested on FRIDAYS. Current math fact lists are kept in the yellow sleeve. Timed tests are given on WEDNESDAYS. *On the first day of school, second graders are to bring a 1 inch 3 ring binder with pockets on the inside front and back covers

Storytown Students should read for at least 10 minutes nightly! READING *robust vocabulary discussed orally in class *weekly story should be read at home once it has been shared in class *comprehension tests are given on FRIDAYS. STUDENTS MUST READ THE TEST INDEPENDENTLY Students should read for at least 10 minutes nightly! SPELLING *new lists given on Mondays *tests given on Fridays *challenge words are graded WRITING/GRAMMAR *weekly writing and grammar activities correspond with what is being studied in Storytown *students also take some assignments through the writing process

Go Math! STUDENTS WILL STUDY: *number concepts *numbers to 1,000 *basic facts & relationships *2-digit addition & subtraction *3-digit addition & subtraction *money and time *length in customary & metric units *data & graphing *geometry BASIC FACTS— Practice, practice, practice! (Weekly timed tests will be given. Yellow study pages will come home for practice).

Science We are using ScienceFusion. Students will learn about the weather, space, magnets, animals, and of course butterflies!

Social Studies The district has purchased a brand new Social Studies curriculum! Details coming soon! 

Health Emotional and Intellectual Health Growth and Development Nutrition Disease Prevention and Control Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drugs (Saint Vincent College Prevention Projects)
