Gen Epigen Transcript omics The basics “To convey and discuss recent biological, functional, methodological and bioinformatical advances in GET-omics….” The basics Organization and participation ALN, YL and NHS are the joint facilitators of each meeting Critical mass of participants must be reached Time and place Lunch journal club every second week Thursdays from 12am-1pm No more than 1 hour Library on 6th floor

Participation Structure A timetable with presenter and dates will be prepared If prevented from presenting on the allocated date, the presenter will be responsible for arranging a substitute Articles are selected by the presenters The article, and potential supporting material, must be available to the group a least one week in advance (preferably placed on the homepage http://dream.au.dk/get-omics-journal-club/) Choice of article should be based on topics of general interest and within the field of GET-omics. The length of the article should be appropriate. Supporting material can be included for clarity, but preferably provided alongside the article one week before the meeting. One presentation 30-45 min, remaining time for discussion The presenter brings coffee to the meeting Responsibilities ALN, YL and NHS Coordinating the meetings Prepare schedules, inform about change, be of general assistance Participants Prepare presentation Read articles to be presented beforehand Contribute with views and comments at the meetings Participate as often as possible!

Presentation format Introduction Provide a brief background on the study State the study´s hypothesis Describe the basic approach used in the study Describe the results of the study Explain the significance of the results of the study Critique the study Explain the rationale for undertaking the study What is the context for this study? What previous work led up to experiments done in the study? State the study’s hypothesis What are the scientific questions being addressed in the study? Describe the model system and/or special techniques being used Why was this particular model or technique employed? Are there any specific pros and cons? Describe the data shown in each figure State conclusions made from each figure

A suggested format of the presentation Explain the significance of the results of the study Describe the importance of the results Has the study change the way of thinking in the field? Have the results refuted existing models or mechanisms? Have the results provided more definite evidence to support existing models or mechanisms? Are there new hypothesis emerging from the study? Critique the study Describe limitations and discuss the study Are there alternative interpretations for the data presented in the study? Are there additional controls that can/should be included? Are there any approaches that could improve the study significantly?
