Seeing Colour By the end of this lesson, you will be able to… Explain why we see coloured objects. Describe the strcuture of the eye. Today’s Activities Thinking – why are objects coloured? The Eye - labeling
By the end of the lesson, you should be able to explain why we see these coloured objects: A green leaf A white snowman A black book
Coloured Objects Why are coloured objects coloured? What happens when white light hits a coloured object? Are all parts of the light…….. reflected? absorbed? transmitted?
Coloured Objects Black objects absorb all colours and reflect none. White light White light White light White light Green light A white snowman A green leaf A black book Black objects absorb all colours and reflect none. Green objects reflect green light only. White objects reflect all colours
How do we see things? An object that gives out light is described as luminous. How does light from a luminous object such as a light bulb reach the eye? Light travels in a straight line directly into the eye. An object that does not give out light is non-luminous. How does your eye see a non-luminous object such as a comb? Light hits the comb and some of it is reflected into the eye.
How the eye works optic nerve – carries information from the eye to the brain retina – where the focused light is detected ciliary muscle – where light enters the eye lens – light is focused onto the retina iris – controls the amount of light entering the eye cornea – focuses the light and protects the eye
How the eye works optic nerve – carries information from the eye to the brain retina – where the focused light is detected. Specialised receptor cells in the eye’s retina are stimulated by specific frequencies (colours). ciliary muscle – where light enters the eye lens – light is focused onto the retina iris – controls the amount of light entering the eye cornea – focuses the light and protects the eye
