Academic Affairs Update Monday, October 17, 2016 College Senate Meeting Academic Affairs Update Monday, October 17, 2016

For Information and Consideration Faculty Handbook General Education and College Requirements Course Content Accessibility The Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) Survey

Faculty Handbook Project Manager: Dr. Richard Lee, Professor of English. Administrative oversight provided by the Provost and the Associate Provost for Academic Programs. Content based on the current College Handbook. Revised hypertext document will include links to policies and procedures. Meetings with all relevant parties through Spring 2017. Draft document by early May 2017. Final document released June 2017.

General Education and College Requirements We need to keep our collective eye on the ball: student learning. The General Education Committee will be coming forward this semester with a proposal to create programmatic frameworks: Problem Solving and Making Connections. All General Education courses will need to be re- vetted based on the new frameworks. The General Education program should be pared down to ensure that learning outcomes are being achieved College-wide. Later, we will consider new College graduation requirements.

Course Content Accessibility Seeking compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 as amended in 2008. Face-to-face and online accessibility issues. Initial focus on PDF’s and video closed captioning for traditional classrooms. Any videos purchased for classroom use must include closed captioning. Gradual conversion of face-to-face courses to be completed by Fall 2018. All faculty teaching online courses will need to take the new certification course prior to the Summer of 2018. Waivers of the certification course will not be granted except under special circumstances.

COACHE Survey The COACHE survey is a comprehensive faculty job satisfaction survey that was developed by the faculty in the Harvard Graduate School. The COACHE survey is a SUNY initiative, and was last administered in 2011. The survey takes, on average, 22 minutes to complete. The survey will be open on January 24, 2017 and will close on April 5, 2017. Survey results will be available in July of 2017. Results will be shared for follow-up activities in the Fall of 2017.
