Google Maps & Wiki-space Integration By: Ben Miller Port Huron Cohort

Rationale of Unit Use new and interesting technology. Develop use of technology in core classes. Create useful projects. Learn new technology tools. Enhance love of learning.

Lesson 1 & 2 Lesson 1 Lesson 2 Conduct research. Post research at locations on Google Maps. Organize information. Lesson 2 Use research information in another way. Post information to Wiki space. Learn another way to organize information.

Lesson 1 – Google Maps Research Conduct research on Civil War battles Find pictures and other images Develop a timeline Create walkthrough for battle Organize text, images and media

Lesson 1 – Google Maps Apply Research Create a new map Find locations of battle based on timeline Create placemarks for locations Input all media, text and images Organize layout to follow timeline

Lesson 1 - Advantages Learn to use technology in core classes. Realize that technology is useful! Learn old topics in new ways. Expand learning to fully understand topic.

Lesson 1 - Disadvantages There are very few disadvantages. Technology limitations can be a problem. Lack of network / computer speed. Unorganized entry to the lesson. Teacher not understanding technology Students not understanding technology

Lesson 1 – Review Very adaptable application Painters Battles People Useful for a full understanding of the topic. Demonstration of Google Maps http://maps.google.com

Lesson 2 – Wiki Research Utilize research from previous lesson. Can be added on to other assignments. Students grasp the entire topic! Development of class review material.

Lesson 2 – Wiki Apply Research Post information related to each battle. Integrate Google Maps research. Allows collaboration on topics. Each student must understand their topic. Development of class study materials.

Lesson 2 - Advantages Creates a full understanding of the topic Develops research and collaboration skills. Does not limit under/over achievers. Adaptable to many courses and topics. Can be modified throughout the year.

Lesson 2 - Disadvantages Students research = total outcome. Each student must be accountable for info. Technology limitations are bad. Teacher understanding of technology. Students understanding of topic. Time and effort involved.

Lesson 2 - Review Creates a full view of topic. Develops research and collaboration skills. Integrates Google Maps. Understanding of new technology.

Unit Review Learning new uses for technology. Redeveloping skills for the classroom. Teachers use new methods of instruction. Overall understanding of topics.
