How to Write a High-Quality Technical Paper for Publication -----Qing Li

Rules Topic must be something new! “Delta” papers are not welcomed. Results must be convincing. References must be fully cited. Hold firm standpoints. Strong evidence and proof. Key points must be clear, and logic flow should be smooth. Exhibit “hierarchical” structure.

“Pitfalls” to Avoid Topic is old and no longer promising. 2) Little/no idea on who your readers are. Ask yourself about whom your paper is intended to, why and how would they like to read it. 3) Introduction is plain and not attractive. A good introduction + good Motivation = half of your success!

4) Over ambitious in scope You cannot solve and report all the problems in one paper! So try to avoid claiming too many things, and just on one or two ,but do it well and in-depth! 5) Making a wrong assumption? Or is it a refutation of a hypothesis on the problem!! An explicit claim, and strong evidence to support your claim! What to claim? Does your technique perform better than its rivals in one or more of the following dimensions? behavior : coverage: efficiency: usability:

How? Title: be indicative and concise! Abstract: Not a summary of your paper, but of your research problem, your claim and evidence. Introduction: Very important! Motivation Significance Paper structure Related work: critical review on others’ work supporting the motivation need to differentiate from your own approach and/or contribution

Problem Statement and Algorithm Design: the main body: for highlighting your contributions need to explain your ideas in detail; preferably with examples algorithms in pseudo code ok, but with explanations, analysis and/or discussions Evaluation: Evidence to support your claimed contributions Experimental results are expected unless it is a theory or conceptual paper

Conclusion: Summary of what you have done Discussion of the significance Mention of some future work issues References: Enumeration of cited work related to your reported research

How? Some “tricks” Design well before writing. Assess the purpose: what you really want to research? Avoid using long sentences(short sentences preferred)! All good ideas can be simply explained and presented. Put enough time and emphasis on the introduction. Provide adequate figures. Be aware of who your “enemy” are. Check who are Editor-in-Chief or editorial board members, and cite their relevant work.
