The Wonderful World of… TECHNOLOGY

Class Starter What is technology? page 388-391 What is technology? What is a technical object? Give some examples. What is a technical system?

1) What is Technology? Technology is the making, usage, and knowledge of tools, machines, techniques, crafts, systems or methods of organization in order to solve a problem or perform a specific function. (Wikipedia definition)

2) What is a Technical Object?

2) What is a Technical Object? A man-made object that serves a purpose (or function).

3) What is a Technological System? A technical object which transforms matter or energy. Ex: A scooter transforms chemical energy (gasoline) into kinetic energy that moves the scooter (and the driver) forward.

Components of a system Technical systems have: Inputs: Everything that enters a system Ex: matter, energy, force a transformation process The task the system performs Outputs: Everything that exits a system Ex: can be matter, energy

Ex: The Apple Peeler- a technical system

Ex: The Apple Peeler- a technical system Inputs Initial material Verification and Control mechanisms Energy Source Outputs End material Waste and residue

Ex: The Apple Peeler- a technical system Inputs Initial material Verification and Control mechanisms Energy Source Outputs End material Waste and residue Apples Manual adjustment of the apple Muscle force (chemical energy) Peeled apples Apple peels

Ex: A dishwasher- a technical system

Ex: A dishwasher- a technical system Inputs Initial material Verification and Control mechanisms Energy Source Outputs End material Waste and residue

Ex: A dishwasher- a system Inputs Initial material Verification and Control mechanisms Energy Source Outputs End material Waste and residue Dirty dishes Water Dishwasher detergent Selection of an automatic wash cycle Electricity Clean dishes Waste Water

Ex: A kettle- a technical system

Ex: A kettle- a technical system What is the function of this technical system? __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Inputs Initial material Verification and Control mechanisms Energy Source Outputs End material Waste and residue

Ex: A kettle- a technical system The function of a kettle is to boil water. Inputs Initial material Verification and Control mechanisms Energy Source Outputs End material Waste and residue Room temp water On/ off switch Lid lever Light to signal boiling Graduations to measure volume Whistle to signal boiling Electrical energy Boiling water None
