AIM OF THE GAME The aim is to win enough points to win a game, enough games to win a set and enough sets to win a match. The first person to win six games wins a set, but only if they are leading by two clear games.

Start of the game Players must toss a coin to decide who starts. The winning player then starts off with a serve from the opposite box to their component.

Duration of the match A Female tennis matche can last up to 3 hours as they only have to win 2 sets however the average is about 2 hours total. For men, a match can go up to 5 hours (playing 5 sets) but the average is about 3 and 1/2 hours altogether.

Scoring Size of the pitch A game is played up to 40 points then its match point. 1 win equals 15 points. The winner must be leading by at least a 2 point lead. Size of the pitch The average size of a tennis court is 78 feet.

Facilities and equipment In a game of tennis you will require a tennis pitch with nets and a tennis racket and ball. Officials You will also require a umpire and a line judge and a match ref.

Specific rules Playing surface When playing tennis there a few rules laid out there is to be no swearing or foul language and the referee is not to be hit in the face when playing both these will lead to a code violation. Playing surface The surface which they play on is to be a non slip painted surface.

Health and safety Tennis safety precautions include playing on a safe court. A visual inspection of the court gives you an idea of the playing conditions and any maintenance that may be needed before the court is deemed safe. Choosing the right tennis racket for your ability and size helps you play safely, reducing your risk of injuries to the elbow, wrist or shoulder Safety precautions for tennis extend to paying attention to the weather. Hot, humid days on the tennis court can be a hazard if you are not appropriately dressed or hydrated. Prepare for tennis on nippy days with several layers of lightweight clothing that you can shed as you heat up on the court, such as a shirt and fleece jacket.
