Say what? What is a virtual world? What is virtual property? Why should we care?

What are Virtual Worlds? "virtual worlds are computer-moderated, persistent environments through and with which multiple individuals may interact simultaneously. (Bartle 2004)

What are Virtual Worlds? "A virtual world is an alternative, non-physical world, in contrast to the real, physical world we live in." (Erlank 2012)

Types of Virtual Worlds Levelling Killing for points and social status Examples: WoW Everquest Non-levelling Socialisation is the purpose There.com Second Life

What is virtual property? "Property" has different meanings Mostly objects Found INSIDE virtual worlds Similar in form and function to real world counterparts Have value Either economic Or Sentimental And should be protected By same legal remedies as in the real world It is not "just a game"

Virtual property object Example: Virtual chair at wrestling match or Virtual sword Versus ….

Interesting facts Virtual World Crime Economically Speaking Theft of items – both in and outside of VW Courts will protect against theft Economically Speaking More than 7 Billion US Dollars

Conclusion: Don’t laugh at the person who plays WoW: They are probably making money…. And could have a real sword. Questions?
