What is Global Warming? It is the gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere (also known as Climate Change) Human activity has increased the production of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere In recent years global temperature has increased significantly The warming of atmospheric temperature can have a drastic affect

Greenhouse Gases They are emitted into the atmosphere due to natural processes such as… Decomposition of Organic Compounds Gas emitted from landfills Common Types of Greenhouse Gases include Carbon Dioxide Methane Nitrogen Sulfur Dioxide Methane Molecule Carbon Dioxide Molecule Nitrogen Molecule All of these Gases contribute to the greenhouse effect...

Factories adding Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere EXAMPLES OF GREENHOUSE GASES ADDED TO THE ATMOSPHERE Factories adding Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere

Greenhouse Effect It is heat retention by greenhouse gases Essentially, it keeps the earth's atmosphere warm Too much heat retention can be detrimental to earth’s habitats

Habitats Global Warming can affect many habitats in different parts of the world A habitat is the environment in which a species normally lives or the location of a living organism Global Warming can have a drastic effect on an arctic habitat Arctic Reefs Rain Forest The Sea

Consequence of Global Warming on The Arctic Can affect many habitats in different parts of the world but it A habitat is the environment in which a species normally lives or the location of a living organism Can have a drastic effect it can have on arctic ecosystem These effects include… Glaciers and polar ice sheets melt Creation of icebergs that eventually melt Sea Level rises and low-lying areas become flooded Risk of the Arctic ice cap completely disappearing Polar Bears and other animals lose their ice habitat Species of Arctic waters may become extinct Alters food chain Polar Bear Melting Glacier

Annual Global Temperatures Trends 1856-1910 the temperatures were relatively stable 1910-1940 the temperatures rose 1970- continues to rapidly rise Hottest year on record 2014 An anamoly is the difference between the long-term average temperature (sometimes called a reference value) and the temperature that is actually occurring. In other words, the long-term average temperature is one that would be expected; the anomaly is the difference between what you would expect and what is happening.

Precautionary Principle A principle that should be followed when possible consequences can have a drastic effect on society It assumes the worst until proven false Should be assumed when results could be catastrophic Ex: Court of Law (pg. 45) No proof for Global Warming
