Compare and Contrast To compare and contrast is to tell how two or more things are alike and different. Clue words such as like and as show similarities. Clue words such as but, instead, and unlike show differences. Most of the time, there are no clue words.

How do pink dolphins compare to regular dolphins? Alike Different Both are animals that swim in water. The pink water dolphins swim in rivers while other dolphins swim in the ocean. Both are mammals. Pink dolphins don’t have fins on their backs and other dolphins do. Both use sound to find things. Pink dolphins are flexible while other dolphins are not. Both come to the surface to breathe. Pink dolphins don’t leap out of the water like ocean dolphins. Unlike fish, both move their tails up and down to swim.

Tell how the Amazon is alike and different from where you live.

Can you think of ways that these stories are alike and different?
