Computer Hardware Can you name some computer components? - CPU (Central Processing Unit) - Memory (RAM) - Hard drive - Ethernet card - Modem - Video card - CD-ROM/DVD-ROM - USB ports - Motherboard - Parallel ports

Computer Hardware What do each of these do? - CPU (Central Processing Unit): “brain” of the computer, does calculations - Hard drive: Stores data, programs, the Operating System - Main Memory (RAM): where data is stored temporarily - Ethernet card: device that allows us to connect to the Internet [fast] - Modem: device that allows us to connect to the Internet [slow] - Video card: displays content to the monitor - Sound card: delivers sound from the hard drive to the speakers - CD-ROM/DVD-ROM: allows us to view and use CD/DVD media - USB ports: allows us to connect external devices (mouse, iPod, web cam, etc) [fast] - Motherboard: the central part of the computer that connects all the components - Parallel ports: we can connect external devices here
