HTS Workshop: Evidence Using Graphs and Maps Effectively

Using Graphs and Maps Effectively Graphs & maps are staple stimuli for AP exams (especially popular in multiple choice!) Analyze in similar fashion to text documents Use the graphs or maps to analyze material beyond what is presented You need to extrapolate and hypothesize about the visuals, then draw inferences

Using Graphs and Maps Effectively For maps, ask these questions: Does the map suggest factors, trends, or developments that you had not previously considered about the topic? What are they? What groups would benefit or be hurt by the changes shown by the map? One a political map, for which political group is the map good news? For which is it bad news? According to the map, what geographic region is changing? What cultural, social, or economic impact might result from these changes? What is the central point or idea of the map? What questions are left unanswered by the map?

Using Graphs and Maps Effectively For graphs, ask these questions: What trends does the graph trace? Who would benefit from these trends? Who would be hurt? For a political graph, what partisan problems or opportunities does it suggest? What relationships or connections among events or factors can you infer from the graph? What is the central point or idea expressed by the graph? What questions are left unanswered by the graph?
