Think through the arguments and conclusions. Begin to construct your own writing. Use Brian Green’s “The Enemy in the Mirror” instead of McNerney.

Making Your Own Meaning Write a summary: what is this essay about, and what does it say? list the key subject and purpose of each paragraph. Try to be brief but clear and accurate. If you think visually, try drawing your summary and listing a few key words to help explain.

Making Your Own Meaning Read between the lines: share the impressions you have of the author’s point of view based on the tone and word choice in the essay. Be prepared to point out specific phrases or sentences that give you your impressions.

Making Your Own Meaning Find the meaning by investigating features: Where could this photo be from? What do you think happened? What makes you say that?

Chart your ideas: What happened? Why do we think that?

What’s It Called? Find the title by investigating: What might Brian Green’s essay be called? What makes you say that? Record what you notice throughout the essay - quote words or phrases. Explain what you think each is or means or does. Based on what you find overall, guess the title of the essay.

Chart your ideas: Title? Why do we think that?

Write It Out What’s it called? Write me a brief paragraph, explaining what you think the title of this essay is and why. Give details to help explain.
