Personality syndromes

Meaning Most personality patterns have some basic similarities. These similarities are due to the use of similar child training methods in home and the school. “Syndrome” is the medical term which is commonly used to refer to personality patterns that show basic similarities. In medical terms, syndrome relates to the pattern of predisposing causes of disease, its symptoms and its course.

Types of personality syndromes Cartel described two types of personality syndromes: Abnormal syndromes: A number of syndrome characteristics of abnormal personality patterns have been identified. These have proved valuable in diagnosis of personality disorders. Normal syndromes: Among normal people, tests and clinical data have proved that personality syndromes result from similar training in the home and school, similar attitudes and similar cultural pressures.

Abnormal syndromes Psychopathic personality: The syndrome of the psychopathic personality includes such traits as: Unreliability Deceitfulness (untrustworthiness) Egocentricity (selfishness) Improvidence (carelessness) Antisocial Extreme emotional shallowness Inability to show anger, love and other common responses. But individual may possess superficial charm and give the impression of having sound mental health.

Abnormal syndromes Delinquent Personality Strong drives Weak conscience (sense of right and wrong) Dissatisfaction Defensiveness Rebelliousness Anxiety Tension Emotional immaturity Hypersensitivity

ABNORMAL SYNDROMES Manic Syndrome: Effective stage of eagerness and joyous excitement. Association of ideas is rapid and uncontrolled. Thinking is flighty. Memory to place, time and identify are sound but the individual does not recognize that his personality has changes.

Normal syndromes In normal people, tests and clinical data have revealed that personality syndromes result from similar training in the home and school, similar attitudes and similar cultural pressures. Syndrome of overprotected only child Syndrome of only child having home environment

Overprotected only child Selfishness Self centered Lack of cooperation Dependency

Only child having home environment Independence Cooperativeness Responsibility etc. Good social adjustments Assume leadership roles among their peer

Creative personality syndrome Need for autonomy and independence Flexibility Non conformity Playfulness Forcefulness Aggressiveness
