Intro Our country is Laos We chose Laos because we thought it had a really awesome name It’s really poor So we wanted how well the country in general did like if they earned money on exports and imports or if they lost money on these exchanges

Overview Population: 6.5 million Language: Lao Capital: Vientiane Ethnic groups: Lao, Khmou, Hmong, over 100 minor President: Choummaly Sayasone Prime Minister: Thongsing Thammavong Currency: $1 Lao kip to Canadian is $0.000124341 $1 Canadian to Lao kip is $8,042.42

The History of Colonization Tai people first settled in the 13th century France took over Laos and made it part of French Indochina in 1893 Introduced corvee (10 days manual labour to government from civilians) Japanese brief occupation during WWII Independence from Japanese in 1945 - communism, originated by German philosopher Karl Marx, spread into Laos with support by Russians and china During Vietnam war and became form of government

Colonization cont... French colonized till October 1953 Independence as a constitutional monarchy after French leave Occupied by communist north Vietnam in the Vietnam war as a supply route Adopted communist government spread into Laos with support by Russians and china During Vietnam war Colonization a direct example of globalization

What are the main exports wood products, coffee, electricity, tin, copper, gold, agriculture, clothes, rubber, cement $1.842 billion (2011 est.) Effects of globalization France brought first coffee plant Communism all industry is controlled and owned by government Eg. Mining companies are state owned Some agriculture is grown to support a family other wise is sold for a profit http://www.flarenetwork.org/report/top_news_100615/article/vietnamese_army_exposed_as_timber_smuggler.htm

What are the imports machinery and equipment, vehicles, fuel, consumer goods Luckily around 70% of the people depend on the land instead of depending on city’s and other industries imports are 2.37 billion (2011 est.) http://www.asdonline.com/lv/

What are the main industry’s of Laos Tourism Because of places like Huge cave system used in the Vietnam war, Vieng Xai Pha That Luang, it symbolizes the world of materials at the bottom and the world of nothingness Mekong river, it goes through most of southeast Asia and is a great way for them to travel And stuff is extremely cheap like for a loaf of bread it can only cost 25 to 35 cents sometimes more

Living Conditions 26. percent living below the material poverty line in 2010 male: 60.85 years (2011 est.) female: 64.76 years (2011 est.) Most of the population does not have access to potable water Do not live very long Not very wealthy so not as healthy Live shorter than here female life expectancy at 82.7 and male expectancy at 78 in Canada in 2005

Laos average life span

Living conditions cont.……….. Pop density 26.87 in 2010 in 1 sq. kilometer, Laos 3.75 in 2010 in 1 sq. kilometer, Canada Canada is way more spread out Laos is more crowded 34 million Canada to 6 million Laos 3.4 unemployment rate 1994 Laos 7.4 for Canada

GDP (Gross Domestic Product) Is the value of all finished goods and services made in a country within a certain time period $17.66 billion us (2011 est.) Laos $2,700 US per capita Laos 1.414 trillion us 2011 Canada 41,100 us 2011per capita Canada

Effect on environment Light and sound pollution is biggest concern Unsatisfactory waste disposable Not very clean Environment not doing great Eg. export of Wood products caused deforestation

Way of life most continue to live in their traditional way in Laos Canada is it is rarer to still follow ancient traditions Still live off of the land Rice is turning into cash crop Some people do grow it as their own food source

Conclusion We learned that In Canada we live 20 years longer Lot’s of people depend on land People die young About a quarter of the people there live under the material poverty line In Canada we live 20 years longer
