How argumentative texts are organized Unit 2 Lesson 1

Follow these directions: Write down your homework. Get 2 articles from below. You will need a post-it note today and a writing utensil.

Turn & Talk: What is your opinion on regifting?

“Is it ok to Regift?” Purpose for reading: As I read out loud, what do you notice about how the text is organized? Notice and note on a post-it note.

How is the text organized? Two column comparison Yes vs. No – authors state opinion Authors are “experts” on the topic Short “Debate” Title is written in a question format Pull quote Source – New York Times UpFront Magazine; online VOTE NOW!

Pull quote Type of text feature Definition: a small yet important idea pulled out from the text that is in a larger, bolded font. Purpose: to entice readers and to highlight the main topic Turn and Talk: Why does the pull quote change point of view from how it appears inside the text?

Partner Work: So what? How does the text structure of the article effectively convey information about the topic?

Homework: Read “Students Who Lose Recess Are the Ones Who Need It Most” and notice and note how the text is organized. Due Friday.
