What are the IOC looking for in an Olympic host city? Sustainability Legacy What do these mean?

What are the costs of hosting the Olympics? Could Hong Kong host the Olympic Games in 2024

Why do cities want to host the Olympic games?

The Olympics can bring investment into poor areas of a city Local people want it! It ‘shows off’ the organisational skills of the city / country hosting. It can improve performance in sport and inspire young people to take part in sport The national economy can be boosted through spending by tourists and investment by TNCs The Olympics can bring investment into poor areas of a city

As a group Research the economic costs of hosting the Olympic Games Sydney 2000 Athens 2004 Beijing 2008 London 2012 Rio 2016 Extension: How much was funded by tax payers, investors and media

Should Hong Kong host the Olympic Games in 2028? Your task is to come up with a convincing argument for or against Hong Kong applying as a candidate city for the 2028 Olympic Games. Discuss what the city could benefit from? Rank these in order of significance

Identify a site for the main stadium Use Google Earth It must have Access to MTR /possible MTR Infrastructure (water, electricity) Space to build a stadium (you can use ‘brownfield sites’) Potential to improve deprivation Remember you need to make it sustainable and ensure a positive legacy!

The national government A developer The government will be involved in identifying locations for the Olympic park and in attracting investment by sponsors and transnational corporations. They will be interested in maximising social and economic benefits of hosting the Olympic Games whilst minimising the environmental impacts. Members of the national government are elected by the public, therefore they will be interested in maximising their popularity. A developer In the Olympics, developers will be involved at all stages of the design, preparation and construction of facilities for the Olympic Games. These are usually private companies and include architects, surveyors and planners. Local business owners Owners of businesses including shops, hotels and factories. Some of these will benefit from increased revenue during the Olympics, whilst others will benefit from improved investment, improved infrastructure and transport services. Some local businesses will need to be relocated in order to make space for the Olympic park. Tax payers Over 80% of the funding for the Olympic Games comes from public money that is generated by taxes. Tax payers will be keen to make sure that their money is being spent effectively and that they will benefit from improved employment and reduced rates of poverty and deprivation. Representative from Greenpeace Greenpeace is a non governmental organisation that is present in over 40 countries. It is an environmental organisation focussing on issues such as climate change, pollution and deforestation. They will be concerned that the Olympic Games have a positive impact on the environment. Transnational corporations TNCs such as McDonalds, Coca Cola and Adidas are involved in the sponsorship of the Olympic Games. They will be interested in advertising their brand at the games.

Read through the information on your stakeholder “A stakeholder is a person or group with an interest or concern in an issue”. Explain to your group what your concerns or priorities will be regarding the Olympic games. Remember to consider LEGACY and SUSTAINABILITY
