Presentation transcript:

For the Wimmera/Mallee in Vic: As an estimate, cereals produce 76,800 t CO2e/yr, canola 3,400 t CO2e/yr and pulse crops 8,800 t CO2e/yr.   For livestock GHG emissions are: 134,500 t CO2e/yr from cattle and 497,000 t CO2e/yr from sheep.

Achieving least cost GHG abatement–opportunities in Australian grains farms Peter Thorburna and Marit Kragtb a CSIRO Ecosystem Sciences, Brisbane b University of Western Australia CSIRO Ecosystem Sciences & Sustainable Agriculture Flagship

Objectives To estimate levels of greenhouse gas abatement and carbon sequestration that are economically feasible in response to different management practices in Australian grains farms. Improving the capability to model the effects of soil organic matter on crop growth in APSIM Estimating the biophysical potential of farm management (e.g. no till, grain and graze systems, fertiliser management) to mitigate GHG emissions (In current and future climates) Estimating the whole-farm financial effects of practices to mitigate GHG emissions Identifying the most profitable and productive farm management systems applicable to Australian grains farms that maximise greenhouse gas abatement.
