Materials qualification meeting John Matheson 12/01/17 Materials qualification meeting Questions I need to answer: What glues are we interested in ? What equipment and manpower do we have ? What testing activities will we do ? ….. Right now I have more questions than answers ! I started looking at this in the context of work at RAL As RAL is working on module to half-ring mounting for pixels and module to stave mounting for strips, my main concern is SE4445 This was chosen to be soft enough to allow rework Its flexibility also must reduce the stresses due to mismatched CTE Would be good to know how much it hardens under irradiation What is the effect of repeated thermal cycling ?

Techniques at RAL include: Instron mechanical pull/shear testing Dynamic mechanical analysis - this gets us Young’s modulus as a function of temperature and so we can watch changes in flexibility with irradiation Also DSC, FTIR, UV-Vis spectroscopy….. Manpower is available within the Advanced Materials Group, but both this and a flat rate for access to the machines must be paid If we do mechanical testing and DMA we estimate being able to measure circa 4 samples per day or 20 per week. I guess a week costs £2.5K all-in but this needs to be discussed internally. DMA takes much longer than simple mechanical measurements (pull, shear). We need to find some money ! At this point it starts to get more useful to talk about the UK, not just RAL….

In the UK there are several work packages within the ITK Upgrade for which glue irradiation is important. There is broad consensus that the UK should be involved, not just RAL First approach to Liverpool University elicits the reply that Tim Jones has 5kN and 30kN materials testers (pull, shear, etc.) and are willing to perform measurements for us. UK ITK Upgrade may be able to save money (e.g.) by asking the Universities to do the mechanical tests and just doing the DMA at RAL where necessary At the present time we want to discuss the available resources. The relevant meeting occurs every Monday and we will try to get an answer as soon as possible. The idea is that by asking for contributions from several work packages we hope to build up a useful total resource, which we can then offer. Also I should make up a list of glues used in all WPs, there will be many more than SE4445 alone !

The $64M Question: What would be useful for the UK to contribute overall ? How many samples there will be in total ? What measurement(s) will be done on each ? How many samples per institution need to be measured ? What is the amount needed to pay for the irradiations ? (and is paying this optional ??). A few measurements on SE4445 might just be enough for me personally, but the UK as a whole may be able to contribute significantly to the program. Once I have understood what fraction of the work the UK would do ideally, I will use this as a starting point for discussions about resources.
