ROV Sonar Submersible Alvin Word Splash ROV Sonar Submersible Alvin

Ocean Exploration At one time, scientists thought that life could not exist on the deep ocean floor Too dark , cold and too much pressure to explore

In 1977, scientists diving in Alvin to the Galápagos Rift discovered a new community of organisms. These organisms can withstand tremendous pressure, high temperatures, utter darkness, and toxic chemicals. These organisms are called extremophiles because of the extreme nature of their living conditions.

Ways to explore Submersible- submerged under water- built to withstand the crushing pressure of the deep ocean. Example: alvin

Ways to Explore Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV)

Ways to explore Mapping out the ocean floor SONAR- Sound Navigation and Ranging emit an pulse of sound into the water, bounces off the object and returns an “echo” to the sonar transducer
