How is Soil Formed? Over many years, weathering and erosion will cause the formation of soil. Soil is the loose, weathered material on the Earth’s surface.

Objective: Agenda Identify different soil types using a soil triangle Collect Homework Cemetery observation lab Soil Notes Soil Triangle activity Read pages 353-356 answer question 1-5 on page 356 ( if not completed in class must be done for Homework!)

Soils

What is soil? It is the accumulation of loose, weathered material The material from which soil is formed is called parent material.

Two types of soil Residual Soil - formed from parent material ( bedrock under the soil) Transported Soil - soil that has been moved from one area to another by erosion. Most soil on the Earth's surface is transported.

Climate and Soil More weathering = deeper soil Farmers need a deep layer of organic material for their crops

Soil Profile Soil will form horizontal layers called soil horizons. A- Horizon is called topsoil B and C Horizon is subsoil

Soil Composition Rock material in soil contains three parts: sand, silt, and clay. Organic material- humus Decaying plant and animal remains
