Lesson starter Write down 2 differences between complete and incomplete metamorphosis

Reproductive Organs in Females Saturday, 28 July 2018 Learning question: What are the different parts of the female reproductive systems?

Learning objectives Identify the structures of the female reproductive system and state the function of each (refer to vocabulary list) Identify the structures of the male reproductive system and state the function of each (refer to vocabulary list)

Key words: Vagina Uterus Cervix Fallopian tubes / Oviduct Ovaries Ova/Eggs Oestrogen Progesterone

Task 1 Watch the video about the female reproductive system to give you an overview Collect the summary sheet to label the female reproductive system and make short notes on the function of each part. This does not mean copying everything word for word! https://clickv.ie/w/1iMh

Ovaries The two ovaries (one of them is called an ovary) contain hundreds of undeveloped female gametes (sex cells). These are called ova (one of them is called an ovum) or egg cells. The ovaries produce two sex hormones called progesterone and oestrogen. These chemicals make ova mature and control the menstrual cycle

Oviduct Each ovary is connected to the uterus by an oviduct. This is sometimes called a Fallopian tube. The oviduct is lined with cilia, which are tiny hairs on cells. Every month, an egg develops, becomes mature and is released from an ovary. The cilia waft the egg along inside the oviduct and into the uterus.

Uterus and Cervix The uterus, also called the womb, is a muscular bag with a soft lining. The uterus is where a baby develops until its birth. The cervix is a ring of muscle at the lower end of the uterus. It keeps the baby in place while the woman is pregnant.

Vagina The vagina is a muscular tube that leads from the cervix to the outside of the woman's body. A man's penis goes into the woman's vagina during sexual intercourse.

Task 2 Complete Stile lesson 8 (human reproduction – the structure and function of the female) If you do not complete this during class time, it must be completed as homework – I will be checking!

Lesson starter What are the names of the two hormones that are produced in the ovaries?

Reproductive Organs in Males Saturday, 28 July 2018 Learning question: What are the different parts of the male reproductive systems?

Learning objectives Identify the structures of the male reproductive system and state the function of each (refer to vocabulary list)

Key words: Penis Testes Scrotum Sperm Semen Urethra Testosterone Vas deferens / sperm duct

Testes and Scrotum The two testes (one of them is called a testis) are contained in a bag of skin called the scrotum. The testes have two functions: to produce millions of male gametes (sex cells) called sperm to make testosterone (male sex hormone) which affect the way a man's body develops

Sperm duct/Vas Deferens and glands The sperm pass through the sperm ducts, and mix with fluids produced by the glands. The fluids provide the sperm cells with nutrients and a liquid to swim in. The mixture of sperm and fluids is called semen.

Penis and urethra The penis has two functions: to pass urine out of the man's body to pass semen out of the man's body The urethra is the tube inside the penis that can carry urine or semen. A ring of muscle makes sure that there is no chance of urine and semen getting mixed up.

Gonads and Primary Sex Organs The gonads are organs that produce gametes In males, these are the testes In females these are the ovaries Gonads are the primary sex organs of an organism.

Task 1 Complete Stile lesson 9 (human reproduction – the structure and function of the male) If you do not complete this during class time, it must be completed as homework – I will be checking!
