Misconceptions In Science Lecture 3

Start Up Research has found that sugar does not, in fact, cause hyperactivity in children. A double blind study found that even children with diagnosed ADD and ADHD demonstrated no differences in behavior based on a sugar free or sugar laden diet. (Fullerton-Smith, J. (2007). The Truth About Food.) Given overwhelming social beliefs regarding the impacts of sugar on children’s behavior how would you go about sharing this information with the parents of your students? Or would you not? Why?

What To Do? Discuss why you think these students have these misconceptions. How teachers should address misconceptions with their students? What makes effective feedback?

Misconceptions We know there are many of them. We know they are commonly held. We know they are difficult to change and robust to change. We know that teachers and parents are the leading promoters of them.

Effective Feedback Classroom linguistics and power structures Self efficacy vs. Self esteem QAE patterns Saying No vs. QAERqAE Correct mistakes directly Be explicit never implicit (remember Clark!)

Break 15 minute break…

Scientific Demonstrations What is a demo? Why do we do them? How do you teach one? What you will need to do for your microteaching demos…. Project discussion.

What is a demo? There are times when you cannot, for safety, time, or cost considerations, have an entire class conduct independent labs to experience or observe a scientific phenomena. A demo (short for demonstration) is a science activity that is teacher lead and conducted by the teacher to show students, usually visually, a specific scientific phenomena.

Why do a Demo The chosen demonstration allows students to experience in some first hand way a natural phenomena. Phenomena is dangerous and should not be done by students Phenomena is expensive to have students do individually It would be too time consuming to do a full class lab.

Demoing a Demo…. Hard boiled egg in a bottle….

Feedback Take five minutes and give me feedback on my demonstration in writing. What can I do better? What did I do well? Thoughts? Comments?

Micro Teaching Groups of 4-5 You will write lesson plans prior to micro teaching covering your topic and demonstration. You will evaluate your peers using rubric provided Rewrite lesson plans and deal with feedback. Reteach Feedback again.
