The difference between obtaining a job interview and getting ignored. Cover Letters

What is a Cover Letter? To be considered for almost any position, you will need to write a cover letter. Such a letter introduces you, explains your purpose for writing, highlights a few of your experiences or skills, and requests an opportunity to meet personally with the potential employer.

Why should I have a cover letter? Precisely because this letter is your introduction to an employer and because first impressions count, you should take great care to write an impressive and effective letter. Remember that the letter not only tells of your accomplishments but also reveals how effectively you can communicate.

Cover Letter Contents A cover letter should complement, not duplicate, your resume. Its purpose is to interpret the data-oriented, factual resume and add a personal touch. Effective cover letters explain the reasons for your interest in the specific organization Identify your most relevant skills or experiences (remember, relevance is determined by the employer's self-interest) They should express a high level of interest and knowledge about the position.

Cover Letter Contents Salutation Dear Mr./Ms. Last Name, (leave out if you don't have a contact or using Dear Hiring Manager) First Paragraph Include information on why you are writing. Mention the position you are applying for and where you found the job listing. Include the name of a mutual contact, if you have one. Middle Paragraph(s) Describe what you have to offer the employer. Mention specifically how your qualifications match the job you are applying for. Remember, you are interpreting your resume, not repeating it. Final Paragraph Thank the employer for considering you for the position. Include information on how you will follow-up.
