Norton’s Field Guide to Writing ENGL 1301 Compiling a Portfolio Norton’s Field Guide to Writing ENGL 1301

Portfolios How many of you have ever compiled a portfolio before? Have you ever compiled a composition portfolio – a writing portfolio?

What are they? Why have one? A writing portfolio, like other types, “includes a writer’s best work and, sometimes, preliminary and revised drafts of that work, along with a statement by the writer articulating why he or she considers it good” (287). The reason for having a writing portfolio is, as the statement articulates, that “it provides you with an occasion for assessing your overall strengths and weaknesses as a writer” (287)

Rhetorical Situation Purpose: Why are you creating this portfolio? Audience: Who will read this portfolio? Stance: How do you want to portray yourself in this portfolio?

What goes in it? On p. 288 they provide you with a list of things that should and can go in a writing portfolio, however, I am only going ask you for a few things: 1. A 1-2 page justification for why you feel this portfolio represents an improvement in your writing abilities, a self-assessment (example on p. 292-4) 2. Revised drafts of Essays 1 – 4

Electronic Portfolios We will, when the time comes, submit these electronically for submission. There will be an Assignment link in Canvas for you entitled: Final Portfolio

The Five Files combined… Each of the five files: 1. Statement of Submission – this is your statement of why the writing is a sampling of your improvement 2. Essay 1: Superhero Narrative 3. Essay 2: Super Rhetorical Analysis 4. Essay 3: Super-Reporting Information 5. Essay 4: Arguing about Superheroes Titling these works correctly is part of following directions and will account to your grade

Statement of Submission I am asking for 1-2 pages for this, and this is your statement letter that notes your improvement and acts as a self-assessment of that process. You can go as high as 3 pages. I would suggest you take heed of the example found in the book on p. 292-4 and follow the format Note, the bottom of the letter notes “Enclosures (3)” while yours would read “Enclosures (4)” based on the fact that in addition to this document you are enclosing 4 Was.

Submission Due: Friday, May 5 by 11:59 PM All documents integrated into the SINGLE document template for submission.
