Alsop FAITH 2017

ALSOP FAITH 2017 “Alsop is a school not just IN a community, but a school LEADING a community”

Alsop – “A school leading a community”

Why FAITH 2017? After Brexit we devised a six-month programme of activities to foster community cohesion and highlight that “We are far more united and have far more in common with each other than the things that divide us.”

Alsop – “A school leading a community” Faith 2017 was devised to inspire young people to be compassionate, responsible citizens able to listen to others, discover common values and work together in their communities.

Alsop – “A school leading a community” We worked with different faith traditions to demonstrate how our school can be a force for the Common Good.

Alsop – “A school leading a community” The initiative consisted of a series of events, talks, visits, workshops and social action projects. Our outstanding multi- faceted outward facing initiative has gained both national and international interest.

Alsop – “A school leading a community” Jenny Sinclair worked with Alsop to produce a Common Good Schools Toolkit. It demonstrated how a school rooted in its community can be a force for the common good.

Alsop – “A school leading a community” “Pupils’ social, moral, spiritual and cultural education is a strength of the curriculum. The school is a safe and happy community, where diversity is recognised and celebrated.” Ofsted April 2017

Highlights of FAITH 2017 JUSTICE Day – Year 9 participated in workshops. Students with local clergy led a Hillsborough Justice Day Service. Mrs Margaret Aspinall addressed students and released 96 red balloons.

Highlights of FAITH 2017 Faith Encounters - workshops were led by members of the Jewish, Sikh, Buddhist and Christian communities. This was followed up by visits to a mosque, a synagogue and cathedrals.

Highlights of FAITH 2017 #PILGRIM ED – worked with a cluster of small rural primary schools to facilitate a pilgrimage of teddies around Liverpool. They appear on a blog on the FAITH 2017 website and on twitter @FAITH17T4CG.

Highlights of FAITH 2017 Archbishop of York Young Leaders Award – students are studying this unique active citizenship programme which empowers young people to make a difference in their local community whilst growing in key leadership skills.

Highlights of FAITH 2017 Liverpool Premiere of Holocaust Film “84303” – this is short film about the life of a Holocaust survivor. After the film, Mr Zigi Shipper BEM, delivered his Auschwitz Survivor testimony.

Highlights of FAITH 2017 Yom Hashoah – Year 13 students visited Auschwitz. They led Holocaust Memorial Day at Alsop and participated in HMD at Liverpool Town Hall. These students also spoke Yom Hashoah at King David School.

Highlights of FAITH 2017 The Great Get Together – a community lunch was held to celebrated the life of the late Jo Cox, MP. Students stood alongside the Liverpool Lord Mayor to demonstrate that we do have “more in common.”

Highlights of FAITH 2017 “More in Common” Alsop produced a series of posters as a positive response to the Manchester terrorist attacks. These posters celebrate diversity, promote contemporary people and provide inspirational quotes.

Highlights of FAITH 2017 Visit of Italian Teachers Thirteen Italian teachers visited Alsop to learn more about FAITH 2017 and the Common Good Schools toolkit.

Highlights of FAITH 2017 FAITH 2017 demonstrates that Alsop truly is a beating heart of our community. After a recent visit to Alsop Chief Constable Andy Cooke commented that Alsop is an “Exceptional school with exceptional staff.”

Why does FAITH 2017 deserve to win the Educate 2017 Community Award? “Alsop is a school not just IN a community, but a school LEADING a community. This community has its share of problems. At Alsop I saw only solutions. Alsop - the school, the staff, the pupils - inspired me. If ever an initiative deserves rewarding, then it is FAITH 2017.” Alastair Machray - Editor, Liverpool Echo

Why does FAITH 2017 deserve to win the Educate 2017 Community Award? “FAITH 2017 has had a huge impact upon the lives of so many people. It has done so much to foster a sense of community. “Alsop is gaining a reputation for being an outward facing school at the heart of the North Liverpool community.” Rev Canon Dr Ellen Loudon - Diocese of Liverpool

Why does FAITH 2017 deserve to win the Educate 2017 Community Award? “Alsop students are actively engaged in many extra- curriculum activities and local community initiatives.” “The school sets a good example of cooperation between parents, teachers and the local community.” Lord Mike Storey

How can we measure the IMPACT of the FAITH 2017 initiative? “We believe our sons participation in community activities has enriched his life and made him a better person. “Alsop is a school that reaches out to both parents and local residents. His involvement with FAITH 2017 has enriched his education and earned him a place at a Russell Group University. “We are delighted that he has been involved with an initiative that has had such a great impact upon the wider community of North Liverpool.” Year 13 Parent
