The world trade in coal Lesson outcomes: Essential students should be able to outline the role that coal plays in the global energy mix and that of the UK. Stretch will be able to describe trade in coal Challenge will be able to contrast the trade in coal to other commodities such as oil and natural gas.

What do you think the term ‘Energy Gap’ means?

Key points from lesson Energy sources are long distances from the point of consumption Energy supplies are distributed unevenly The developed world has less energy than middle and low income countries

Researching and analysis task Produce a Word document which summarises the features of the world trade in coal. Include one map showing the distribution of coal supplies. Include 2 graphs and describe the trends that they show about world coal supply and demand. Write an extended summary including the countries involved, including a comparison and analysis of the facts and figures. Make sure you include contrasting countries, i.e. some richer (more developed) countries and some poorer (less developed) countries.
